Role

The Senior Accountant provides financial services of superior quality and convenience through performing complex accounting functions, including fiscal interpretation and analysis, with full professional competency. This position provides subject matter expertise to the accounting team and other departments and identifies improvements to the department’s operating methods. The Senior Accountant assists the Controller with ensuring compliance within credit union practices/procedure, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), regulations, and policies.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Oversees assigned accounting functions and ensures transactions and financial reporting are recorded accurately, timely, and in accordance with GAAP, NCUA requirements, regulatory guidance, and Credit Union policies.
  • Performs and reviews complex general ledger accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accounts payable/receivable, and other assigned accounting functions.
  • Owns assigned components of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process, ensuring established deadlines are met and material variances or accounting issues are identified and resolved timely.
  • Prepares supporting schedules, documentation, and analysis for external audits, regulatory examinations, and other financial reporting requirements.
  • Researches and resolves complex or non-routine accounting matters, including interpretation and application of GAAP and applicable regulatory guidance, escalating significant matters as appropriate.
  • Serves as a subject-matter resource to other accounting team members and provides guidance and training on accounting processes, reconciliations, systems, and procedures.
  • Partners with departments throughout the Credit Union researching accounting issues, improving processes, and ensuring transactions are appropriately recorded and supported.
  • Assists the Accounting team in all phases of company accounting activities including planning, developing, and implementing effective accounting policies, procedures, and controls. Coordinate with the Controller to prepare accounting policy and procedure manuals that reflect current regulation.
  • Supports the Credit Union’s Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL) process, including preparation and validation of data inputs, review of model outputs, maintenance of supporting documentation, and coordination with key stakeholders.
  • Prepares and maintains Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) accounting, including related journal entries, general ledger reconciliations, supporting schedules, and quarterly analysis; assists management in documenting the adequacy of the allowance and supporting the quarterly ACL governance process.
  • Maintains knowledge of all Credit Union products, services, and promotions.
  • Contributes to efficient Credit Union operations by performing other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience: Three years to five years of similar or related experience.
  • Education: (1) A bachelor's degree, or (2) achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree (e.g. information technology certifications in lieu of a degree).
  • Other Skills: Position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must have experience using computers and MS Office software.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes and/or seasonal brightness through windows. This position may involve periodic stressful conditions. The Credit Unions business days are Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; however, this position may occasionally require an adjusted work schedule, overtime, and to include evening/weekend hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
