Job description

Haven is a California cannabis company with twelve retail stores, cultivation, manufacturing, and distribution under one roof. We are rebuilding our accounting team and functions from the ground up, and this is the seat that gets built alongside the Controller and within the finance team.

As a Senior Accountant, you will be an integral part of our finance team, contributing to the accuracy and transparency of our financial operations. Your primary responsibilities will include managing financial records, preparing financial statements, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. You will play a key role in the month-end and year-end closing processes, as well as collaborating with various departments to analyze and interpret financial data.

What You Will Do

Close and reconciliation

  • Own the month-end and year-end close for a set of assigned entities end to end, on committed dates.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts with a supporting schedule behind every material line. This is the single biggest body of work in front of us.
  • Reconcile intercompany activity across entities and drive it to eliminate at the consolidated level.

Reporting and consolidation

  • Support the build and maintaining of a consolidation schedule.
  • Support the build of divisional profit and loss reporting, including the allocation of shared corporate costs to the divisions they serve.
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages for leadership and stand behind the numbers in them.
  • Help build a monthly consolidated cash flow statement, which the company does not produce today.

Systems and process

  • Work in QuickBooks across multiple entity files, plus our seed-to-sale and distribution systems.
  • Help adopt and hold a standard chart of accounts across the entity set.
  • Create standard operating procedures for new processes and any improvements. We are moving this function off institutional memory and into written process and the shared library.
  • Work alongside our offshore accounting team, reviewing their output and helping raise the standard of it.

Judgment

  • Bring problems forward early, with your read on them.
  • Tell us when a number is not credible yet, and what it would take to make it credible.
  • Hold the books to GAAP, and flag where we are not there yet.
What We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Two or more years audit and assurance experience, Big 4 or national firm preferred. This is the background we most want in the seat, because the work in front of us is reconstructive.
  • 3+ years of full-cycle accounting and general ledger experience in a manufacturing, distribution, or other high-transaction-volume business.
  • CPA license, or designation. We will support you through the exams.
  • Someone who can be handed context and a goal and run with it. Our Controller's time is the scarcest resource in the department, so this seat has to be additive from early on rather than needing to be directed daily.
  • Strong written and verbal communication. You will be explaining your numbers to people who are not accountants.
  • Comfortable working in a business that is being rebuilt while it runs.

On multi-entity experience: our environment is more than twenty entities, and if you have worked across a structure like that, say so. But we are not screening for it. The entities currently run as separate sets of books with no real consolidation, so there is less multi-entity complexity to navigate today than the entity count suggests, and our Controller has deep multi-entity experience and can teach it. We would rather have the right person and cover this than screen out a strong candidate over it.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in licensed cannabis, or in another heavily regulated industry.
  • Familiarity with 280E and 471(c).
  • Experience standing up a consolidation or a divisional reporting model for the first time, rather than inheriting one.
Where This Goes

We are building an accounting department under new leadership, not filling a slot. The path from this seat runs to Accounting Manager and Assistant Controller as the function grows and as you demonstrate ownership. We would rather tell you that honestly up front than pretend the ceiling does not exist or promise a title we have not yet built.
