Responsibilities

• Assist various crews in maintaining and repairing city areas (streets, drains, rights-of-way, buildings).
• Operate sewer cleaning equipment (power rodder, high velocity water jet, sewer flusher) to remove obstructions.
• Load/unload materials and equipment; cut brush; mix concrete; use hand tools.
• Drive trucks to and from work sites and assist with parking and equipment attachments.

Works under the supervision of an assigned foreman or supervisor. Performs semi-skilled manual work assisting various crews involved in maintaining and repairing areas within the City such as storm drain systems and sanitary sewer lines, city streets, roadside ditches, rights-of-way, buildings and facilities. May perform functions such as unclogging and maintaining the City's sanitary sewer lines and drain system by operating sewer cleaning equipment such as power rodder, high velocity water jet, and sewer flusher to remove roots, debris, and other refuse from clogged sewer lines, removing obstruction may involve handling industrial size water hose and flexible cable with various attachments. Dispenses chemical solutions according to foreman/supervisor instructions, cleans tools, attachments, and equipment using appropriate cleaning solvents when assigned. Assists with engaging and disengaging equipment attachments. May lift, climb into, and clean manholes and drainage facilities such as inlets and culvets, using rake, shovel and wheelbarrow. Cuts and clears brush, weeds, and debris from work area. Loads and unload materials, tools and equipment from trucks. May mix concrete and utilize an air hammer to dig and remove asphalt and concrete.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires ability to traverse uneven surfaces and across ditches, wooded areas, and river swamp lands. Requires bending, climbing, pulling, crouching, reaching and lifting items such as manhole covers 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Requires ability to operate assigned equipment and hand tools such as portable cement mixer, jack hammer, hatchet, ax, asphalt lute, shovel and pneumatic and hydraulic tools such as pavement breaker and chain/pavement saw. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions, fumes and odors. May be exposed to traffic, insects, weeds, and poisonous plants. May be exposed to emulsifiers, bacteria, insecticides, sewer solvents, etc. May drive trucks to and from various work sites throughout the City.

Qualifications

Ability to understand written and verbal instructions and three (3) months experience in construction and maintenance. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver's License if assigned to General Services Park Operations Service Center and comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment.
