The City of Houston's HAS Maintenance division seeks a Semi-Skilled Laborer in Horticulture & Grounds Maintenance to operate minor equipment and perform manual tasks supporting Opening Day Fresh aims across airport assets.

The purpose of the Houston Airports (HAS) Maintenance business unit is to effectively deliver self-performed, and contracted, maintenance services at each of the three HAS airports.
The purpose of the Semi-Skilled Laborer in the Horticulture& Grounds Maintenance section of the Houston Airport System is to safely and efficiently operate minor equipment to perform a series of manual activities and tasks supporting the goal of "Opening Day Fresh" by prolonging the life and aesthetic beauty of airport's owned assets through effective, efficient, and proactive maintenance.

The position requires extensive, near-continuous physical exertion such as repeated lifting of very heavy objects (more than 80 pounds), deep bending, climbing steps and/or assuming awkward positions. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements.
Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling. No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required.
Six months of working experience are required.
Must have a valid Texas Class C driver's license and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

The selection process will involve application review and/or interview. Department may administer skills assessment test.
If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if it is a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
Pay Grade 6
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
