Job summary

Juneau School District seeks a Support Staff/Special Education Paraeducator to work primarily with students in BEST, DEC-C, DEC, or Transitions programs. The role involves presenting material to improve reading, writing, math, computers and vocational skills, and may include one-on-one or small-group instruction.

This 9-month, full-time position (0.9333 FTE) pays $27.40 per hour and offers medical, dental, vision, PERS retirement and paid time off.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Prior experience with school-age children preferred.
• CPR, first aid and district-approved behavior management techniques may be required; includes de-escalation and crisis handling.
• Valid Alaska driver's license required.
• AA degree, or 48 semester hours, or pass WorkKeys exam (support available).

Position Summary: Works primarily with students who are in special education and enrolled in BEST (Behavioral Education Support Team), DEC-C (Developmental Education Classroom-Communication), DEC (Developmental Educational Classroom), or the Transitions program. Presents material and activities to improve skills in assigned areas, which may include reading, writing, math, computers and/or vocational education. Works individually or in small groups. Records grades and does data collection for other measures of students' progress or behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma
• Some prior experience working with school-age children is preferred
• CPR, first aid and district approved behavior management techniques may be required. (includes have a general understanding of behavior modification techniques; demonstrates the ability to remain calm and follow through with a plan in stressful situations; manage and deescalate angry and aggressive students; and handle a variety of behaviors, including crisis situations).
• Valid Alaska driver's license required.
• Must have either an AA degree, or 48 semester hours, or be willing to take and pass the WorkKeys exam (support available).

Knowledge Of

• Files and record keeping.

Compensation

: This is a permanent, full-time 9-month position, working 35 hours per week, with a starting salary of $27.40 per hour. We offer an excellent benefit package including medical, dental, vision, the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) plan, and paid time off. This position is represented by the Juneau Education Support Staff (JESS) bargaining agreement.
