Job summary

Travis County is seeking a Security Officer to protect facilities and people across county sites. You will monitor access, respond to incidents, and help maintain a safe, welcoming environment for employees and visitors.

This is a temporary, non-benefited role with retirement plan eligibility and a cap of about 30 hours per week. The position requires vigilance, reliability and the ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the stated education and abilities is acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide security services during normal business hours, after hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Monitor building entrances, doors and windows to ensure they are secured during non-business hours.
  • Report security violations and suspicious activities to appropriate authorities.
  • Perform vehicle and foot patrols and escort visitors and staff as needed.
  • Observe and respond to emergencies with sound judgment and professionalism.
  • Maintain awareness of safety, security, and customer service standards.

Security Officer plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well-protected environment for all Travis County employees and visitors. In this position, you will serve as the first line of defense in safeguarding the property, monitoring activity, and responding to situations with professionalism and sound judgment. We're looking for individuals who are attentive, reliable, and committed to upholding high standards of safety and customer service within our facilities.

Provides security services during normal business hours or after hours and on weekends and holidays. Ensures doors and windows are locked and secured during non-business hours. Reports security violations and questionable activities. Monitors buildings for damages from flooding, equipment failure or vandalism.

This is a temporary, non-benefited position that includes retirement plan eligibility. The average work schedule will not exceed 30 hours per week.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is an Essential job classification within the Public Safety/Emergency Management job family. This classification is responsible for the security functions and does not have any lead or supervisory duties or responsibilities. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.

  • Provides assistance, directions and information to visitors and County employees/officials. Signs visitors in and out of assigned facilities. Escorts visitors and staff on and off building premises upon request.
  • Provides vehicle and foot patrol.
  • Makes rounds of each floor of assigned building and/or makes rounds by vehicle and foot patrol of assigned buildings.
  • Ensures doors and windows are locked and secured. Monitors security camera systems and verifies proper operation of building electronic door lock systems. Turns off lights not needed for security.
  • Reports security violations, questionable activities and emergencies to appropriate authority.
  • Ensuressecuritylightingandsecuritymonitoringsystemsarefunctioning.Monitorsoutsideareas for vagrants and other unauthorized personnel. Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, skateboarding or smoking within 15 feet of building exits.
  • Monitorsheatingandairconditioningsystemsforproperoperationduringnon-business hours as directed. Checks assigned facilities for leaks, during rainstorms. Monitors buildings for equipment failure or vandalism, notifies proper emergency contacts for repair.
  • Notes building repair and maintenance needs and reports these deficiencies for correction.
  • Conducts patrols in County vehicles and post operations including following all orders as specified per assignment.
  • Attends training and certification courses as needed and as required by the Department, in order to maintain certifications and skills necessary to perform the job.
  • Conducts screening of individuals and property to identify prohibited items at assigned locations.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

High School diploma or G.E.D.

Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements
  • Must maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must maintain CJIS security clearance.
  • Must be flexible to work and provide assistance to other work shifts.
Preferred

This position may require you to work outdoors in extreme temperatures on a daily basis.

  • Standard building security systems, including operations and maintenance.

  • Work independently andefficiently.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and officials, and the general public.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting to perform the essential functions. Requires constant walking and standing and exposure to outside elements.

Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Work Hours: Must be flexible to work at AM/PM/Overnight. $1.50 Shift differential for PM and Overnight hours. Works some holidays, some nights, and some weekends.
