Responsibilities

  • Attend work on a regular basis with rotating or extended shifts.

  • Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds.
  • Disseminate and coordinate emergency responses, notifying hospital management and law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Assist in the apprehension of suspects during unauthorized entry or other violations.
  • Prepare timely and accurate incident and investigative reports.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for changes to security regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, such as disaster response or COOP activation.

Job Title

Security Officer II – Forensic Security department.

Job Summary

The Security Officer performs complex security duties at the state hospital, ensuring a safe environment for patients, employees and visitors. Responsibilities include monitoring alarms, patrolling campus, handling after‑hours emergencies, coordinating emergency responses, identifying unfamiliar persons, maintaining security records, and participating in disaster response and continuity operations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Attend work on a regular basis, including rotating or extended shifts per agency leave policy.
  • Monitor surveillance cameras for unauthorized persons, fires, and other incidents, and report emergencies immediately.
  • Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds.
  • Disseminate and coordinate emergency responses, notifying hospital management and law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Assist in the apprehension of suspects during unauthorized entry or other violations.
  • Prepare timely and accurate incident and investigative reports.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for changes to security regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, such as disaster response or COOP activation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of building security and surveillance equipment.
  • Knowledge of building admission and exit regulations and alarm devices.
  • Oral and written communication skills, including incident reporting.
  • CPR administration skills or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Ability to communicate safely with aggressive patients, visitors and employees.
  • Capability to patrol grounds, detect danger and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to produce concise reports.
  • Calmness, reasonableness, and quick reaction in emergency situations.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications
  • Valid Texas driver license; if out‑of‑state, provide certified driving record.
  • CPR certified or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Minimum of 24 months of work experience.
  • Preferred: 2 years in security, law enforcement or military.
  • Preferred: 12 months in a mental health or correctional facility.
Additional Requirements
  • Pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years; if applied to Waco or Terrell Center, minimum 21 years.
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and hospital operating procedures.
  • May be required to work overtime, extended hours, or shift patterns.
  • Telework: Not eligible for this position.
