WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals seeks a Security Officer to provide information and assistance to patients, visitors and staff while enforcing WVU Medicine policies for a safe environment. This role requires handling security operations, rounds, and incident reporting within hospital facilities in Morgantown, WV.

Primary duties include responding to information requests, assisting with parking and transport, and supporting disaster drills and emergencies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years in security.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • First Aid certification within 60 days of hire.
  • State and Federal background checks as required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide information and assistance to patients, visitors and staff.
  • Maintain security and safety according to WVU policy.
  • Assist with parking flow, transport, and escort services.
  • Respond to requests for information in a courteous manner.
  • Document activities and incidents accurately for supervision.
  • Respond to emergencies and vulnerable situations per procedures.
  • Perform building rounds and checks of doors, vehicles, and alarms.
  • Report suspicious activity and support disaster drills.
  • Provide patient restraint when directed and safe intervention when needed.
  • Operate hospital vehicles safely and ensure proper vehicle condition.

Job description

Performs a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors and staff. Enforce WVU Medicine policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment, in support of the Security Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  • 1. High school diploma or equivalent AND Three (3) years of experience in the security field
  • 2. Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • 3. Valid Driver’s License
  • 4. Obtain certification in BLS or HeartSaver First Aid within 60 days of hire date.
  • 5. State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas
To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level)
  • 1. Obtain Defensive Tactics Certification
  • 2. ACT 235 training
  • 3. OC Spray Certification
  • 4. Baton Certification
  • 5. Taser User Certification
  • 6. Obtain VA DCJS Registration within six (6) months of hire and maintain
  • 7. Successfully pass psychological evaluation.
  • 8. Completion of the training requirements for an armed security officer
  • 9. Completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and course work
  • 10. Handcuffing Tactics training
  • 11. AVADE Training Levels I - III
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  • 1. Graduation from an accredited Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Academy

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1. One (1) year experience in a healthcare security environment.
CORE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • 1. Maintains consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide an information and directional resource for all patients, visitors and staff distributing accurate information to all who request such.
  • 2. Responds to all patient, visitor and staff requests for information/assistance in a caring, courteous manner.
  • 3. Provides physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services and room access patients, visitors and staff accessing WVU Medicine facilities.
  • 4. Monitors and maintains traffic flow in parking areas and roadways by assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits and warning violations.
  • 5. Protects people and property by assisting in the prevention of accidents, theft and vandalism, in accordance with system and department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision.
  • 6. Performs routine building rounds, building door unlocks, exterior building and parking lot patrol.
  • 7. Makes recommendations to management, staff, visitors and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime.
  • 8. Reports suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents and persons, according to system and department policy and procedures.
  • 9. Responds and provides assistance to patients, visitors and staff during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues, according to system and department policy and procedures.
  • 10. Provides written documentation of activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism and other data requested by supervision in a factual, objective and legible manner.
  • 11. Responds to and provides assistance to patients, visitors and staff during emergency situations such as; assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, disasters, etc.
  • 12. Performs patient restraint as directed by clinical staff, and is capable of physical intervention when appropriate.
  • 13. Operates Hospital-owned vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
  • 14. Ensures safety and proper operating condition of vehicles by performing vehicle inspections, as outlined by departmental policy.
  • 15. Other requirements may include: Incident reporting, routine building rounds, incident investigation, crowd control, restraining patients, disaster response, domestic disputes, med G assists, parking enforcement, consistent presence and visibility, helicopter assignments, media issues, victim assistance, engages in traffic direction, policy enforcement, investigation of alarms, duress, etc., physical intervention, tire changing, battery jumps, parking rounds, effective radio communication, escorts patients/visitors/staff, accurate directions to customers, loss prevention, vehicle assists, transport equipment/staff/visitors/patients, posts assignments for exterior patrol/all canopy/all booths/building rounds/ED, and STOPS training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • 1. Ability to sit, stand and walk for the entire shift and/or double shift.
  • 2. Ability to lift, push or pull 80 pounds.
  • 3. Ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions for entire shift and/or double shift.

  • 1. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee may frequently be exposed to outside weather conditions.
