Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is seeking a Security Officer to join the Department of Campus Police. This full-time, benefitted role requires guarding College buildings and assisting the PVCC community with information and directions around campus in Charlottesville, VA.

The position emphasizes safety, incident response, and professional communication with students, staff, and visitors, with a nonexempt, full-time classification and a competitive hiring range.

Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgement are required.
• Must be computer literate (MS Office or equivalent).
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Three years of post-high school experience and a valid driver's license are required.
• Background check including criminal history and driving history must be cleared.
• CPR/AED/First Aid, Naloxone (Narcan), and Campus Security Officer certification or ability to obtain.

Responsibilities

• Lock and unlock College buildings, doors, and classrooms.
• Provide visitors and College community members with information and directions.
• Notify campus police of suspicious persons, activities or safety hazards.
• Maintain accurate records and logs of activity.
• Operate security & state vehicles.
• Respond to complaints and conduct preliminary investigations.
• Create student & staff IDs and parking decals.
• Respond to alarms and contact police, fire, & rescue in emergencies.
• Patrol among visitors and community members to preserve order and protect property.
• Answer phones, emails and other communications professionally.
• Patrol parking lots and issue warnings for infractions; use ticketing system.
• Provide escorts via campus vehicles to various locations or for personal protection.
• Provide limited assistance for vehicle issues.
• Monitor fire & safety devices; perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

• Lock and unlock College buildings, doors, and classrooms
• Provide visitors and College community members with information and directions to campus buildings, classrooms, and off-campus areas
• Notify campus police of suspicious persons, activities or safety hazards found during tour of duty
• Maintain accurate records and logs of activity
• Operate security & state vehicles
• Respond to complaints and make preliminary investigations.
• Create student & staff ID's, process student & staff parking decal requests
• Answer alarms and disturbances, contact police, fire, & rescue in case of an emergency, and follow established College emergency procedures.
• Patrol among visitors and College community members to preserve order and protect property.
• Answer phones, emails, and other forms of communication in a professional manner.
• Patrol parking lots and issue warnings to persons with rule infractions and utilize the ticketing system for parking violations.
• Provide escort, via provided campus vehicles, to individuals to a specified location or to provide personal protection.
• Provide limited assistance when individuals are experiencing motor vehicle issues.
• Monitor and check fire & safety devices. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possess good judgement, discretion, and excellent interpersonal skills.
• Must be computer literate (MS Office or equivalent). High school graduate or equivalent.

• Successfully pass a background check, including criminal history and driving history.
• Have and or be able to obtain and maintain CPR/AED / First Aid, Naloxone (Narcan), and Campus Security Officer certification. Have basic knowledge of the campus environment and/or the security industry, relevant laws, and safety and fire prevention.

Additional Considerations:

• Prior experience in Criminal Justice or related field, OR two years of law enforcement experience preferred.
• Demonstrated strong student orientation and customer focus.
• A strong service orientation and a demonstrated ability to work in a diverse, multicultural community, and excellent written and verbal skills.
