Job Summary
The Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors within a healthcare facility. This role includes monitoring premises, responding to emergencies, and enforcing safety protocols to prevent incidents such as theft, violence, and accidents. The officer will conduct regular patrols, oversee security systems, and function as a first responder during medical emergencies and evacuations. Equipped with conflict resolution and de-escalation training, the Security Officer will manage sensitive situations with professionalism and care.
Essential Functions
- Conduct regular patrols (interior & exterior rounds) of hospital grounds, entrances, parking lots, and other critical areas.
- Examine doors, windows, gates to determine that they are secure and not tampered with.
- Identify and address unauthorized persons or vehicles, questioning and redirecting or detaining them as necessary.
- Check exterior and interior lighting and access routes to emergency entrances and reports malfunctions to security office.
- Follows departmental procedures related to face to face handoff, etc to ensure that all posts are appropriately managed.
- Employ de-escalation techniques to manage tense or potentially violent situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of patients, visitors, and staff.
- Function as a mediator in conflict situations, ensuring all parties are heard, respected, and that a peaceful resolution is reached.
- Investigates and reports lost, stolen or missing property using the Security Officer's Incident Report Form.
- Detects and reports unusual conditions or malfunctions related to heating, plumbing, or electrical systems on the Security Officer's Incident Report and/or submits a work order.
- Identifies and reports unsafe conditions or acts on hospital grounds through the Security Department Inspection form, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up.
- Performs security duties for all hospital-related and privately organized events held on the premises, ensuring safety and security during such activities.
- Continuously monitors and secures hospital grounds to prevent unauthorized access, theft, and vandalism.
- Monitors and directs traffic flow on hospital premises; ensures vehicles are parked in designated areas and issues warning notices for improperly parked vehicles in restricted zones.
- Performs local transportation duties, including blood and mail runs.
- Ensures that hospital vehicles are fueled, cleaned inside and out, and are properly maintained.
- Reports abandoned and/or stolen cars to Security Office.
- Maintains "key" control for staff and students.
- Safeguards hospital cash and checks after business hours, including weekends and holidays, until the next business day.
- Responds to inquiries from visitors.
- Conducts inspections of safety devices, fire extinguishers, and tests alarm systems per safety protocols.
- Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor to support hospital operations.
- Demonstrates adherence to corporate compliance programs and engages effectively with a diverse range of patients, including pediatric, adolescent, young adult, and geriatric individuals.
- Adheres to Universal Precautions and safety protocols to ensure personal and public health.
- Available for emergency overtime as needed, responding swiftly to urgent situations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Or Equivalent required
- Prior security experience preferred
- Ability to effectively and tactfully relate to employees/visitors.
- Must have good sight and hearing for coping with emergencies.
- Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.
- Also able to work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
- Use de-escalation techniques to manage tense or violent situations, preventing harm to patients, visitors, or staff.
- Serve as a mediator in conflict situations, ensuring all parties feel heard and respected.
- Works every other weekend.
- NYS DRIVER CLASS D LICENSE - New York State DMV Required
- Security Guard - New York Department of State Required
