Job summary

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) seeks a part-time Security Officer to provide security for VMHC properties, buildings, and grounds. The role reports to the Manager of Security and emphasizes excellent hospitality and safety for staff and visitors.

Responsibilities include patrolling, monitoring access, handling cameras/alarms, responding to emergencies, and coordinating with vendors. Requires high school education and DCJS unarmed security registration, with flexible shifts

Qualifications

• High school education is required.
• Strong customer service and professional demeanor.
• Ability to pass and maintain Virginia DCJS registration for unarmed security officers.

Title: Security Officer

Division: Operations & Finance

Reports to: Manager of Security

Position Status: Part-time; Non-Exempt

Salary Range/Pay Rate: $15.00/hour

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Security Officer. The Security Officer is part of Operations & Finance and is responsible for providing security for the VMHC properties throughout buildings and grounds.

Key Responsibilities

• Secures premises by patrolling campus and access points, permitting entry into the buildings and ensuring the security, safety and well‑being of staff and visitors; informs violators of policy and procedures.
• Monitors security risks to the campus and patrons and reports potential problems to the Manager of Security, Security Supervisor or Director of Facilities.
• Monitors security cameras, alarms and fire systems.
• Writes correspondence including logs and reports.
• Monitors all contractors, vendors and visitors in non‑public areas.
• Responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to staff and visitors.
• Receives and notifies departments of deliveries; processes and delivers mail and packages.
• Adheres to policies & procedures of the security and maintenance departments.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High school education.
• Computer and security experience preferred.
• Ability to pass and maintain the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services registration for unarmed security officers.
• Works well under pressure and able to maintain professional composure.
• Excellent customer service skills; must be able to project an excellent level of hospitality.
• Professional appearance is required.

Note & Special Requirements

• Ability to work a flexible/rotating schedule that may require early morning, evening and weekend hours.
• Primarily guest‑facing teams must be in VMHC uniform while on shift.
