Job summary

Tarrant County seeks a Juvenile Detention Officer to support Juvenile Detention and Post-Adjudication staff by escorting detained juveniles and ensuring secure custody. You will de-escalate volatile situations, conduct searches, document non-routine events, and assist with inter-departmental transportation, while upholding safety and discipline for residents and staff.

Requirements include a High School diploma or GED, 2 years in a related field, 1 year with children, and relevant certifications

Qualifications

• CPR/First Aid and Non-Violent restraint certifications desirable.

Responsibilities

• Maintains secure custody of detained residents and prevents incidents.

Summary

Serve in a support role to Juvenile Detention and Post-Adjudication Institutional staff by escorting detained juveniles from intra and inter-locations in a safe and secure manner. De-escalate and counsel volatile and physically aggressive juveniles; maintain secure custody of detained residents; prevent escapes, assaults and misconduct by residents; conduct search and property inventory of new in-custody referrals; conduct dress in and release procedures; conduct personal and facility searches; screen and monitor visitation; counsel and assign disciplinary actions; receive and correctly distribute confidential resident information; assist with inter-departmental transportation and document all non-routine events. Conduct various housekeeping duties including resident laundry.

• Maintains secure custody of detained residents, preventing escapes, assaults and misconduct by residents
• Maintains the safety, health and well-being of residents and staff
• Escorts residents safely inside and outside the facility to multiple locations upon request; escorts all hostile and violent visitors from the Detention Center
• Intervenes in aggressive situations with counseling, crisis intervention, physical and mechanical restraint
• Conducts and documents initial health screening, program orientation and property inventory of new referrals prior to conducting dress in procedures
• Assists the Medical Services Supervisor during medical exams and treatment.
• Determines, implements and documents the need for prescribed disciplinary measures
• Screens and monitors family visits for compliance; receives information and prescribed medications from parents
• Documents incidents and restraints; exchanges information with probation officers; testifies in court
• Conducts facility-wide and personal searches for contraband
• Performs all other related duties as assigned

Physical Demands And Work Environment & Other Requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to walk, stand, reach, hold and lift. Incumbent works primarily inside a locked secure facility and encounters potentially violent and hostile residents and visitors. May also be exposed to contagious medical diseases.
