Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Section Head for HFIR Maintenance to lead the HFIR Maintenance Section and oversee the Maintenance Program and Work Control, with emphasis on safety and reliability.

Reporting to the HFIR Plant Manager, you will implement Melton Valley Complex Facility Management, collaborate with labor relations, and ensure efficient, compliant maintenance to support HFIR missions and neutron science.

Overview

We are seeking a Section Head who provides leadership for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Maintenance organization and is responsible for the Maintenance Program and Work Control process. The HFIR Maintenance Section Head is also responsible for implementation of Melton Valley Complex Facility Management under the direction of the Complex Facility Manager. This position resides in the HFIR Maintenance Section, Nuclear Research Reactors Division (RRD), Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Work Directions and Interfaces

Position reports and is accountable to the HFIR Plant Manager. Interfaces exist throughout RRD and other divisions.

Authority/Approval Levels: Provides work direction to Maintenance Implementation (Craft Supervisors and their bargaining unit employees), Maintenance Engineering, and Maintenance Work Coordinator.

Major Duties / Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership for the Maintenance Section
    • Ensure sustained excellence in the overall conduct of Maintenance to support the HFIR Mission.
    • Reinforce the Nuclear Safety Culture and Human Performance Improvement tools.
    • Work with Labor Relations and the bargaining unit to manage maintenance craft effectively and in accordance with the contract.
  • Direct and implement the Maintenance Program
    • Ensure precision maintenance techniques are applied to avoid introducing equipment problems.
    • Utilize condition monitoring technologies to maximize equipment life without unexpected failures.
    • Optimize and execute preventive maintenance to prevent known failure modes.
    • Respond quickly and effectively to address emergent problems.
    • Manage financial resources in accordance with the Integrated Work Plan.
  • Manage the Work Control process
    • Maintain compliance with HFIR work control processes and applicable organizational requirements. - Structure the process to promote safe, reliable, efficient reactor operation and to support the needs of Complex Facility and Neutron Scattering Experiments work.
    • Ensure consistent implementation of the process in the field.
  • Implement Melton Valley Complex Facility Management
    • Maintain Melton Valley Complex Facilities in excellent condition within available space funding.
    • Work through Laboratory processes to request additional support to meet current and future facility needs.

Basic Qualifications
  • A BS degree in engineering or related science with at least twelve years of relevant professional experience
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory or management experience
  • At least four years of nuclear plant experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with non-destructive testing, understanding of electrical, pressure vessel, piping codes and standards, and maintenance procedures
  • Experience working with bargaining unit employees, labor relations principles, and the ATLC contract
Special Requirements
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available.
