Location: Thunder Mountain Middle School

Temporary Hourly Summer Position

Position Summary

Works primarily with students who are in special education and enrolled in BEST (Behavioral Education Support Team), DEC-C (Developmental Education Classroom-Communication), DEC (Developmental Educational Classroom), or the Transitions program. Presents material and activities to improve skills in assigned areas, which may include reading, writing, math, computers and/or vocational education. Works individually or in small groups. Records grades and does data collection for other measures of students’ progress or behavior.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • Some prior experience working with school-age children is preferred
  • CPR, first aid and district approved behavior management techniques may be required (includes general understanding of behavior modification techniques; demonstrates the ability to remain calm and follow through with a plan in stressful situations; manage and deescalate angry and aggressive students; and handle a variety of behaviors, including crisis situations).
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license required.
  • Must have either an AA degree, or 48 semester hours, or be willing to take and pass the WorkKeys exam (support available).
Knowledge of
  • Files and record keeping.
  • Personal computers and related software.
  • School age children’s behavior.
  • Behavior modification (including emotionally disturbed).
Ability to
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Provide instructional assistance in assigned areas.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing (communicate and coordinate effectively with students, staff, supervisors and parents).
  • Operate a personal computer and related software.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and parents (understand cultural, family and disability issues; be able to adapt techniques as needed).
Compensation

This is a temporary hourly position, working less than 30 hours per week, from July 24 – August 7, 2026, with a starting salary of $27.40 per hour. Summer hourly work is entered into solely for the purposes of operation in an hourly position with JSD outside of the instructional school calendar. Summer employees who work more than 15 hours a week between the dates of May 26 – August 14, 2026 will provide services for a term of no more than 30 days within a classification.

Selected hire will be fingerprinted at applicant’s expense and fingerprints forwarded to the Alaska State Troopers and the FBI for a records check.
