Job summary

NYOS Charter School—Not Your Ordinary School—is a free public charter school founded in 1998 by a group of parents who wanted more out of education for their children. NYOS serves over 1,600 students from PreK through 12th grade, with rigorous academics and civic engagement.

We are seeking a Special Education Educational Assistant to support teachers and students in a nurturing, collaborative environment, with professional development and a healthy work-life balance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university preferred.
  • Valid Paraprofessional Certificate preferred.
  • Special Education experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues to determine instructional needs and teach socially acceptable behavior using techniques like behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to support students' goals in subjects such as English, Mathematics, or Science.
  • Assist with standardized testing administration as required.
  • Monitor students in classrooms, cafeteria, playground and other settings to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate records and meet professional criteria and obligations.
  • Recognize and adapt to differences in students' medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Enforce NYOS Charter School rules and policies and participate in meetings and professional development.
  • Use audiovisual aids, computers, and other interactive technology to supplement instruction.

Primary Role:

This position is for a Special Education Educational Assistant

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university, preferred.
  • Valid Paraprofessional Certificate, preferred.
  • Special Education experience preferred.
Professional Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to determine instructional needs; teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement; establish and maintain procedures to ensure order among students.
  • Provide differentiated instruction in support of students’ goals and objectives in one or more subject areas such as English, Mathematics, or Science.
  • Support administration of standardized testing as required.
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, cafeteria, playground, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, study trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive environment.
  • Utilize efficient record-keeping procedures.
  • Meet professional criteria and obligations.
  • Recognize differences in each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapt methods and interaction accordingly.
  • Enforce NYOS Charter School rules and policies.
  • Actively participate in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and to improve student achievement.
  • Use audiovisual aids, computers, and other interactive technology to supplement instruction.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, accept responsibility, and the ability to be self-motivated.
  • Exemplify through manner, words, and dress the high standards and expected behavior of the school.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Professional Requirements:
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding information concerning students, parents, staff, and classroom incidents.
  • Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible.
  • Participate in approved professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
  • Follow NYOS standard procedures for communication, interaction, and discipline as outlined in the NYOS Staff Handbook
Work Environment:

This job operates in a school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands:

This position is very active and involves standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and move items over 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
