ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
SUMMARY: The Secondary Assistant Principal position provides assistance to the Secondary Principal in implementing the goals for the Chief Leschi Schools. Provides supervision for all building certificated and classified personnel as directed by the Principal.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following:
Instructional Leadership & School CultureAssist in developing and implementing academic programs that align with school-wide goals and curriculum standards.
Support teacher growth through classroom observations, instructional feedback, and professional development planning.
Promote an inclusive school culture rooted in respect, equity, and cultural relevance, particularly for Native American students.
Coordinate assessment programs and utilize data to guide instructional and operational decisions.
Encourage family and community engagement, including participation in cultural events and programs.
Uphold high expectations for student behavior and learning; administer discipline in a consistent and restorative manner.
Oversee student attendance, behavioral interventions (e.g., PBIS/RTI), and support systems.
Maintain visibility during the school day and at extracurricular events to foster positive student relationships.
Collaborate with counselors and student support staff to meet academic and social-emotional needs of all students.
Participate in the hiring, onboarding, supervision, and evaluation of certificated and classified staff.
Conduct staff evaluations in compliance with state and school guidelines.
Promote a positive and collaborative professional culture, supporting instructional excellence and accountability.
Assist in the development and implementation of building-level procedures, safety plans, and emergency preparedness.
Coordinate and supervise extracurricular programs, including athletics, ASB, clubs, and school events.
Ensure compliance with school board policies, state laws, and BIE requirements.
Prepare and review reports, schedules, payroll, and other documentation as assigned.
Serve on school and district leadership teams and represent the school at community or professional functions.

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum RequirementsMaster’s degree in Education Administration or a related field.
Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Principal or Administrator endorsement.
Three (3) years of successful K–12 teaching experience.
Minimum of twenty (20) hours of staff evaluation training.
Experience with student behavior support systems and instructional leadership.
Experience working in a tribal school or with Native American students.
Familiarity with Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) school reform and improvement initiatives.
Knowledge of tribal enrollment procedures and culturally responsive teaching practices.
Ability to maintain a valid Washington State Administrator Certification.
Must pass required criminal background check and drug screening.
Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
Demonstrated leadership in instructional improvement, equity, and inclusion.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of RTI, PBIS, Safe & Civil Schools, and culturally responsive behavior management.
Ability to build trust and positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
Familiarity with data-driven school improvement planning and compliance reporting.
Commitment to confidentiality, ethical conduct, and professional growth.
Duties require standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and occasional long hours at school-related events. Work is typically performed indoors in a school setting with moderate noise levels.
