Role Overview:

Primary Duties

Assisting Mechanics

The Seasonal Mechanic will support lead mechanics with diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues. Responsibilities include:

• Changing tires, performing oil changes, replacing brakes
• Assisting with roadside maintenance and repairs
• Supporting winter‑specific equipment upkeep and emergency response needs

Routine Maintenance

The Seasonal Mechanic will perform basic maintenance tasks such as:

• Cleaning, lubricating, and servicing equipment
• Maintaining overall shop and workspace cleanliness

Diesel Engine Support (Preferred Skills)

Candidates with diesel experience will assist with:

• Diagnosing common diesel engine issues including fuel system faults, glow plug problems, and DEF/exhaust system malfunctions
• Performing basic diesel repairs (filters, belts, hoses, fluid checks)
• Troubleshooting starting, idling, or performance issues on fleet diesel vehicles
• Completing routine diesel maintenance such as oil changes, coolant checks, and DEF monitoring
• Using safe practices for handling high‑pressure fuel systems and diesel components

Additional Responsibilities

• Assisting with fleet maintenance throughout winter operations
• Supporting vehicle recovery and roadside response as needed

Location:

This position is with INDOT's Derby Unit.

Pay Rate:

This position pays an hourly rate of $21/hr.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and right-of-way.
• Moveand load supplies and materials.
• Winter operationduties including snow and ice removal.
• Perform emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades.
• Perform equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections.
• Comply with INDOT Safety Policies and Procedures.;
• Perform job documentation tasks such as entry into the Work Management System (WMS).

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

• High school graduate or High School Equivalent (HSE) preferred.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to move 50 pounds.
• Must have the ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
• Must have the ability to endure exposure to inclement weather.
• Must have the ability to operate specialty traffic equipment (e.g. bucket trucks, paint equipment, etc.).
• Must have the ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
• Must have the ability to work unpredictable and non-traditional hours as necessary to perform winter operations activities.
• Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
