Job summary

The City of East Point is seeking a dependable sanitation truck operator to collect residential refuse on assigned routes. The position reports to the Roads and Sanitation Foreman and requires a valid Georgia CDL.

Duties include operating rear loading trucks, assisting with cleaning, performing routine maintenance checks, and ensuring the vehicle is safe and ready before leaving on route. High school diploma and 1–3 years' experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Valid State of Georgia CDL license or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Operate a rear loading sanitation truck to collect contents of residential carts on assigned routes.

• Perform routine maintenance checks on trucks and/or minor maintenance; report repairs to foreman.
• Ensure truck is cleaned, serviced, equipped and in proper operating order before leaving on route.

Job description

This position is responsible for operating an automated, leaf vacuuming, front-loading sanitation truck to collect refuse along assigned residential routes. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Roads and Sanitation Foreman.

• Operate a rear loading sanitation truck to collect contents of residential carts on assigned routes throughout the City.
• Assist as needed in refuse collection activities and truck cleaning.
• Perform routine maintenance checks on trucks and/or performs minor truck maintenance and informs foreman of necessary repairs or problems.
• Ensure truck is properly cleaned, serviced, equipped and in proper operating order before leaving on route.
• Perform other duties as required.

High School diploma or equivalent; one (1) to three (3) years of experience in a sanitation or related public works position and must possess a valid State of Georgia CDL license; equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Knowledge of geographical layout of City streets and roads and of assigned truck routes.
• Knowledge of collection procedures and City Codes pertaining to refuse collection.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to accomplish division objectives.
• Knowledge of traffic laws, rules, and the safety precautions necessary to accomplish division objectives.
• Skill in the safe operation of assigned vehicles under adverse weather and road conditions.
• Skill in identifying equipment problems and malfunctions.
• Skill in effective and clear oral and written communications.
• Skill in dealing with the public, including hostile or irate customers.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to observe and follow necessary safety precautions in assigned areas.
• Ability to work well with co-workers.

Supervisory Controls

This position is supervised by the Roads and Streets Foreman.

Guidelines

Guidelines include City and departmental policies and procedures and other local and State laws and regulations.

Complexity

Work requires heavy manual labor of a routine manner.

Scope and Effect

The position is responsible for collecting leaves and debris throughout the city to reflect a positive image of the Public Works Department and the city.

Contacts are with co-workers and the public.

Purpose of Contacts

The purpose of contacts is to exchange information and resolve problems.

Physical Demands

The position requires the incumbent to continuously walk, stand, carry, pull, reach, kneel and crawl. The incumbent is required to consistently lift heavy objects, up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

The work is typically completed outdoors near moving mechanical parts. The employee is often exposed to fumes or airborne particles and must be prepared to perform duties in hot, cold, and other inclement weather conditions.
