Job summary

City of Stevens Point is seeking a Seasonal Forestry Aide to support a comprehensive urban forestry program. The role involves a mix of crew-based and solo tasks, including landscape maintenance, planting and removal of plants, and bed preparation, under supervision by the City Forester or City Arborist.

The position is full-season, with 20–40 hours per week. Work may occur indoors or outdoors in all weather, and requires safe operation of hand tools and light power equipment.

Qualifications

• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license or state license acceptable.
• Ability to intermittently sit, stand, walk, bend and lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to work indoors or outdoors in all types of weather.
• Ability to communicate effectively with fellow employees and the public.
• Desired: arboriculture/landscape maintenance experience; ability to haul and back trailers; ability to drive a water tanker truck.

Responsibilities

• Maintenance of landscape plants including watering, weeding, mulching, pruning and fertilization.
• Planting and removal of trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses and ground covers.
• Bed preparation including sod removal, tilling, soil removal/replacement and edging.
• Mowing and trimming small turf areas.
• Assist in pest control procedures including non-chemical methods and pesticide application.
• Use pruning shears, saws, loppers, shovels, rakes and other tools as appropriate.
• Operate chainsaws, brush cutters, mowers, trimmers, rototillers, stump grinders and other grounds equipment.
• Operate pickup trucks and similar vehicles including small tractors.
• Clean and perform maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicles.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Tasks Routinely Performed

• Planting and removal of all types of landscape plants including trees, shrubs, annual and perennial flowers, ornamental grasses and ground covers.
• Bed preparation including sod removal, tilling, soil removal/replacement, and edging.
• Mowing and trimming of small turf areas.
• Assist in pest control procedures including non-chemical means and pesticide application.
• Use pruning shears, pruning saws, loppers, shovels, rakes and other specialty tools as well as basic hand tools as appropriate for the task.
• Operate chainsaws, brush cutters, lawn mowers, string trimmers, rototillers, stump grinders, and other powered grounds equipment.
• Operate pickup trucks and other similar vehicles including small tractors.
• Clean and perform operator level maintenance on all tools, equipment and vehicles used on the job.
• Other tasks as may be assigned.

Qualifications
