Job summary

The Seasonal Field Technician assists the Natural Areas Program staff in managing 10,000 acres of diverse natural areas within the Milwaukee County Park System.

The position works on a wide variety of land management activities with special emphasis on invasive species control, natural resource inventories, wildlife habitat management, and community engagement as it relates to ecological restoration-oriented projects.

Qualifications

• Authorized to work in the United States.
• Possession of a valid United States Driver’s License.
• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Able to lift up to 30 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Invasive Species Management: Habitat Improvement projects including cutting woody material and herbicide applications.
• Wildlife Surveys: Nest box monitoring, migratory and breeding bird surveys, odonate surveys, and bumble bee surveys.
• Vegetative Mapping: Field surveys using ArcGIS Field Maps to inventory rare plant populations, invasive species, tree inventories, and vegetative community types.
• Native Plant Installation: Assist with reforestation, native seed collection, and pollinator garden projects.
• Weed-out Participant: Participate in Park People Weed-Out workday efforts in spring and fall.
• Education and Outreach: Assist with community-based education events and citizen-based natural areas restoration projects.
• Equipment Maintenance: Assist with maintaining the Natural Areas equipment cache and ensure functionality.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Job Summary:

Essential Responsibilities:

• Invasive Species Management: Habitat Improvement projects that include but are not limited to cutting of woody material and herbicide applications.
• Wildlife Surveys: Nest box monitoring, migratory and breeding bird surveys, odonate surveys, and bumble bee surveys.
• Vegetative Mapping: Field surveys using ArcGIS Field Maps to inventory rare plant populations, invasive species, tree inventories, and vegetative community types.
• Native Plant Installation: Assist with reforestation, native seed collection, and pollinator garden projects.
• Weed-out Participant: Participate in Park People Weed-Out workday efforts in spring and fall. This may require working on select weekends.
• Education and Outreach: Assist with community-based education events and citizen-based natural areas restoration projects.
• Equipment Maintenance: Assist with maintaining the Natural Areas equipment cache and make sure it is functional and in good repair.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• Authorized to work in the United States.
• Possession of a valid United States Driver’s License, able to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 30 lbs.

NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbency. In accordance withSection 11, Rule3 of theCivil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
