Job summary

Smiths in Cedar Rapids, IA is seeking a Seal Repair Technician to disassemble, inspect, and reassemble rotating equipment, following repair packets and documented wear analysis. You will photograph critical components and record inspection results.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, at least two years of mechanical seal experience in refining/petrochemical contexts, and ability to read and follow written instructions; some college/trade training is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of mechanical seal equipment experience or comparable experience within the refining, petrochemical, chemical, power, or upstream markets working on or maintaining equipment.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to understand and complete instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Disassemble and assemble rotating equipment following repair packets and router instructions.
  • Take pictures of all critical components and document inspection results.
  • Identify, inspect and evaluate returned material; determine repair operations and initiate work orders.
  • Receive John Crane parts and materials returned; assess repairability based on drawings and knowledge.
  • Ensure components are cleaned and free from foreign material.
  • Assemble the seal after repair release and components have been replaced or reconditioned.
  • Repair returned seals and seal parts under close supervision.
  • May perform parts structuring, cost checks, and price repair; ensure BOM/drawings match.
  • Perform simple operations on drill press, bead blast polisher, and lapping machine.
  • Additional duties as required by the business

Job description

Under general supervision, the Seal Repair Technician is responsible for all processes related to disassembly and assembly of rotating equipment. The Seal Repair Technician follows instruction from a Repair job packet and router to perform DCI (Dismantle Clean and Inspect) and gives a written description of the wear and condition of critical components seal.

This position completes all inspection forms taking pictures of all critical components, and uses inspection equipment for proper documentation of the assembly. With assistance identifies, inspects and evaluates material returned, determines repair operations, performs simple shop operations, verify specifications, initiate work and purchase orders.

Receives John Crane parts and materials returned by customers and branch offices. Evaluates from a condition of material, checks current drawing revisions and general product knowledge whether material is repairable or non-repairable.

Identifies and inspects material returned.

Ensures all components are properly cleaned and free from foreign material per departmental procedures.

Performs the assembly of the seal once the repair has been released to the shop and all components have been replaced or reconditioned and marked ready for assembly.

Under close supervision, repairs returned seals and seal parts.

May perform parts structuring, checks cost structure, and determines price of repair, ensures assembly is structured correctly, and price repair.

Determines necessary repair operations, ensures BOM (bill of materials) / drawings / repair parts match.

Performs simple operations on drill press (single spindle), tool post grinder, bead blast polisher and lapping machine.

Additional duties as required by the business
