Job summary

Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale seeks a temporary scuba instructor to lead classroom and pool courses, prepare lesson plans, supervise students, and coordinate dive trips.

The role requires active PADI Open Water Instructor status, current CPR and First Aid (EFR) certification, DAN Oxygen provider certification, and NSUADP instructor training.

Strong communication and equipment handling skills are essential for safe and engaging student experiences.

Qualifications

  • Active PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Instructor certification (EFR).
  • Current Emergency Oxygen Provider or Instructor certification (DAN or EFR).
  • Active Scuba Instructor Professional Liability Insurance or group policy, if hired.
  • DAN Diving Accident Insurance at Master Level or higher.
  • NSUADP PADI Instructor Development Course or NSUADP practicum prior to consideration for hire.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares lesson plans.
  • Instructs and leads scuba courses in the classroom and in the pool.
  • Utilizes multi-media and training aids.
  • Leads/assists with dive trips of courses and recreational dives.
  • Administers course paperwork.
  • Conducts dive briefings.
  • Prepares, organizes, and closes the dive locker.
  • Distributes and collects equipment from students.
  • Tags equipment for repair and inspects safety equipment.
  • Works with divemasters.
  • Responsible for topside and underwater supervision of students.
  • Responds to student inquiries.
  • Fills scuba cylinders and rinses equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Can only hold one temporary position within NSU.

  • Must be a non‑smoker; smoking is prohibited because it increases the risk of decompression sickness and impairs gas exchange, leading to exhaustion underwater and panic.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to instruct various scuba courses.
  • Proficient in dive rescue and in the demonstration of standard scuba skills.
  • Must be able to carry diving equipment.
Required Certifications & Licensure
  • Must hold active certification status as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Instructor certification (EFR Instructor).
  • Current Emergency Oxygen Provider or Instructor certification (DAN or EFR).
  • Must hold active Scuba Instructor Professional Liability Insurance or join our group policy, if hired.
  • Must hold DAN Diving Accident Insurance at the Master Level or higher.
  • Must be trained through the NSUADP PADI Instructor Development Course or complete an NSUADP semester‑long practicum prior to consideration for hire.
Required Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Required Experience

Previous experience as a dive professional working with students and certified divers in diverse aquatic environments.
