Job summary

Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales, NM is seeking a PRN Surgical Technologist to support the operating room team. The role involves maintaining sterile technique, preparing the sterile field, and assisting the surgeon and team during procedures.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Gather supplies, instrumentation, and equipment for scheduled procedures.
  • Set up sterile table with instruments and medications needed for procedures.
  • Assist surgeon during operative procedures and maintain sterile field.
  • Perform counts with circulator prior to incision and before close.
  • Decontaminate, reprocess and maintain flexible endoscopes.
  • Operate sterilization equipment and document loads and maintenance.
  • Prepare sterile dressings and assist in room turnover between cases.
  • Collaborate with OR and Central Service Sterile Processing to ensure workflow.
  • Cover on-call duties as assigned and restock supplies as needed.

Salary Range: $17.00 To $25.00 Hourly

Job Summary

Surgical technologist work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. They assist the surgeon during the operative procedure by carrying out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissue. They have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. They have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

  • Able to perform proper surgical hand scrub and hand hygiene
  • Ability to properly self-gown and glove using sterile technique
  • Set up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure.
  • Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
  • Gown and glove surgeon and assistants using sterile technique.
  • Decontaminate, reprocess and maintain flexible endoscopes
  • Run daily tests on sterilization equipment and maintain required sterilization documentation for survey readiness
  • Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Sponge or suction operative site.
  • Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders as directed by the surgeon.
  • Cut suture material as directed by the surgeon.
  • Connect drains to suction apparatus.
  • Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
  • Prepare sterile dressings and applies dressings to wound(s).
  • Clean and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assist other members of team with terminal cleaning of room.
  • Prep the room for the next patient.
  • Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
  • Covering on-call duties as assigned
  • Restock in suite supplies as needed
  • Actively participates with new surgical services employee orientation and training
  • Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
  • Responsible for control of all parts of the sterilization process:
    • decontamination.
    • prep, pack, sterilize.
    • documentation of sterilization; and
    • sterile storage including remediation of equipment failures and hazards.
  • Provide integrity and sterility of products and services for the customers.
  • Work in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile products.
  • Maintain consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and Central Service Sterile Processing while practicing excellent customer service.
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment; keep records of loads completed, items of loads and maintenance procedures performed
  • Operate and maintain decontamination equipment
  • Monitor surgery schedules daily, identifying general, specific and potential needs for all cases.
  • Assist with cleaning of rooms between cases and terminal cleaning
  • Assist in preparation with patients in pre-op and post-op area
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies, as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors.
  • Maintain strong working/collaborative relationships with other departments to ensure flow and continuity of services.
  • Attend in-service presentations, including but not limited to infection control, patient safety, quality improvement, MSDS and OSHA standards.
  • Report defective equipment to supervisor or staff.
  • Follows all facility and departmental policies and procedures
