Job description

Job Title: Medical Scribe – Ophthalmology

Job Description

This role provides real-time documentation support for physicians in a high-volume ophthalmology and retina clinic. You will capture detailed medical information during patient encounters, ensure accurate and complete electronic medical records, and help maintain an efficient clinic flow across multiple locations. This position offers exposure to advanced clinical care and high-level research trials, along with clear opportunities for career progression into clinical research.

Responsibilities

  • Document physician–patient encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR) system in real time, ensuring accurate and thorough capture of all relevant medical information.

  • Record patient histories, examination findings, assessments, and treatment plans as directed by the physician.

  • Scribe for multiple physicians, adapting to individual documentation styles and preferences while maintaining consistency, quality, and efficiency.

  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all medical documentation, including correct use of medical terminology, diagnoses, and procedures.

  • Perform precise data entry related to ophthalmology and retina care, following clinic protocols and EMR standards.

  • Support a very high volume of patient care, contributing to the smooth operation of clinics that may see 80–100 patients per day.

  • Collaborate closely with clinic staff and a team of other scribes to support efficient clinic flow and patient throughput.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all healthcare documentation, privacy, and security standards.

  • Travel between assigned clinics several days per week to provide consistent documentation support across multiple locations.

  • Participate in training and ongoing education to maintain and improve documentation quality and clinical knowledge.

Essential Skills

  • 1+ years of on-site scribing experience in a clinical setting; remote-only scribing experience does not meet this requirement.

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in a life science discipline.

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and medical documentation standards.

  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and accurate data entry.

  • Experience supporting patient care in a medical or clinical environment.

  • Ability to multitask effectively in an extremely fast-paced, high-volume clinic.

  • Strong typing skills with attention to detail and minimal errors.

  • Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality and follow healthcare privacy regulations.

  • Driven, and highly organized work style suited to a high-volume environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ophthalmic clinic experience preferred.

  • Experience in healthcare, medical assisting, or related patient care roles is advantageous.

  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high-volume patient care setting, such as clinics seeing 80–100 patients per day.

  • Comfort working closely with multiple physicians and adapting to different documentation styles.

  • Interest in clinical research and potential progression into a clinical research department.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary clinic team.

  • Motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a structured, protocol-driven environment.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site position in a very fast-paced ophthalmology environment. Typical workdays run Monday through Friday, with schedules falling between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on clinic needs. Early starts or late finishes are rare and generally occur only when the clinic is extremely busy. The role functions as a float position across the closest assigned locations, with travel required approximately three days per week. Transportation for these travel days is provided, and travel time is paid. All employees are tied to three primary clinics, and this role’s home clinic will be one of the busiest locations, often seeing 80–100+ patients per day. You will spend most of your time at the home clinic while also supporting other assigned clinics as needed. Schedules are provided two weeks in advance. On rare occasions, typically for training, you may be asked to work at a clinic outside your three primary locations, in which case mileage is reimbursed. Training takes place at an administrative building in the Galleria area. You will work as part of a team of approximately 8–24 colleagues, with each physician supported by a dedicated clinic staff team. The environment is highly collaborative, fast-paced, and focused on delivering efficient, high-quality patient care while also supporting advanced clinical research. The role involves extensive use of EMR systems, medical documentation tools, and standard clinical workflows. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs. Nails must be kept short and well groomed, and hair must be tied back to maintain a professional, hygienic, and patient-ready appearance.
