Job summary

SA Recycling is seeking a Scrap Inspector to be the first point of contact for customers delivering scrap. You will inspect outdoor loads in all weather, document materials, and direct traffic to designated collection sites within the yard.

The role requires safety awareness, basic tablet literacy, and teamwork. Prior general labor in scrap metal or construction is preferred, and bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year of general labor experience in scrap metal or construction preferred.
  • Ability to use a computer tablet and basic data recording.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect incoming customer loads for acceptable and non-acceptable materials.
  • Identify and grade ferrous and non-ferrous scrap.
  • Direct customer traffic to appropriate collection sites within the yard.
  • Deduct weight for non-conforming items and communicate findings to customers and weighmaster.
  • Follow safety procedures and wear PPE as required.
  • Assist with unloading materials and keep work areas clean.

Job description

We are looking for hard-working, reliable and safety minded individuals to join our team as a Scrap Inspector. As an Inspector you will be the first point of contact with our customers as they bring scrap materials into the yard. Your primary responsibilities will be outside in all weather inspecting and documenting customer loads and directing traffic to the proper collection site within the yard. This position will work outside in varying weather conditions, and SA Recycling strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Inspector is responsible for observing and monitoring the delivery of material to verify conformance to quality and quantity specifications, while ensuring that all his/her efforts are compliant with the company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Duties may include assisting with daily production operations, as well as receiving and stockpiling of materials and products. Work Environment: Scrap metal yard, outdoor all-weather conditions.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for inspecting incoming customer loads for acceptable and non-acceptable materials.
  • Maintain a broad and working knowledge of different types of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
  • Identify and grade inbound scrap and reject unacceptable items.
  • Direct customer traffic to the appropriate collection sites.
  • This includes identifying non-conforming items and properly pointing these out to customer and deducting weight as needed.
  • Must have excellent communicating skills and be able to handle stressful situations.
  • Ensure that customers follow proper procedures for selling recyclable materials.
  • Help guide semi-trucks in & out of yard and maintain an efficient traffic pattern for all vehicles.
  • Communicate very clearly with the weighmaster and machine operator for each load.
  • Sort materials for processing as directed and move items to designated storage areas daily.
  • Assist with unloading materials for customers one at a time.
  • Clean and maintain work area daily.
  • Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, & SA Recycling safety, health, & environmental rules, regulations, policies, & procedures.
  • Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures
  • Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned.
Qualifications of an Inspector:
  • High School diploma, GED Certification, or equivalent work experience.
  • 1-year previous general labor in the scrap metal or construction industries preferred.
  • Ability to use a computer tablet.
  • Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) a plus.
  • Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to learn new tasks as assigned required.
  • Must pass a Background Check
  • Must pass pre employment physical and Drug Screen
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Inspectors must be capable of being on their feet most of the day as well as: Work Environment: Scrap metal yard, outdoor all-weather conditions.

  • stand and walk frequently on uneven ground and throughout the yard.
  • lift and carry, capable of repetitive motion and be able to handle physical labor.
  • push and pull occasionally when moving materials.
  • crouch or bend at the knees consistently to move or access materials or equipment.
  • stoop or bend at the waist consistently to move materials.
  • reach at arm’s length and overhead frequently.
  • twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually.
  • climb occasionally when obtaining items.
  • manual dexterity required, as the Inspector will handle, grasp, and manipulate materials constantly.
  • communicate clearly by speech and hearing continually.
  • possess visual acuity needed for close detail work and documentation; and
  • possess mental dexterity to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness of their environment.
