Job summary

The University of Missouri - Columbia invites applications for a Senior Scientist in the Division of Animal Sciences to lead the development and application of reproductive and genome editing technologies in cattle and swine. The role includes designing, executing, and managing research projects to produce genetically modified cells, embryos, and animals while increasing embryo production efficiency.

Daily lab operations, training, and SOP compliance are integral.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field and 4+ years of experience.
  • Master or PhD in biology/animal science preferred.
  • Experience with bovine and swine genome editing.
  • Experience with bovine/swine cells and embryos.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute research projects across the laboratory.
  • Perform daily laboratory maintenance and support ongoing research activities.
  • Conduct molecular biology techniques including PCR, Western Blot, qPCR, and cell culture.
  • Perform genome editing in cattle and pig cells and micromanipulation of oocytes/embryos.
  • Produce cow and pig embryos via in vitro maturation, fertilization and culture.
  • Support animal care activities per approved protocols.
  • Develop and ensure SOPs compliance.
  • Train student workers in techniques and safety.
  • Summarize study outcomes to form manuscripts.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Description

The Senior Scientist will provide scientific and technicalleadership in the development, optimization, and application ofadvanced reproductive and genome editing technologies in both swineand cattle. This position is responsible for designing, executing,and managing research projects focused on the production ofgenetically modified cells, embryos, and animals while improvingthe efficiency of technology associated with the animal production.This position supports daily laboratory operations, researchactivities, and training efforts to ensure efficient, compliant,and high-quality research outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the coordination and execution of research projectsacross the laboratory
  • Perform daily laboratory maintenance and support ongoingresearch activities
  • Conduct molecular biology techniques including PCR, WesternBlotting, real-time PCR, cell culture, cell medium preparation,DNA/RNA isolation
  • Perform genome editing in cattle and pig cells and are able todo micromanipulation of oocytes and embryos
  • Produce both cow and pig in vitro embryos by in vitromaturation, in vitro fertilization, and in vitro culture and assistin the generation of experiments to improve the in vitro embryoproduction system in both species
  • Support animal care activities as needed and in accordance withapproved protocols
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and compliancemonitoring of standard operating procedures
  • Train and assist student workers in laboratory techniques andsafety procedures
  • Summarizing study outcomes to form manuscripts.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Shift

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Others as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 4 years ofexperience from which comparable knowledge and skills can beacquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master or PhD degree in biology, animal science, or anotherrelated field
  • Previous experience in bovine and swine genome editing
  • Prior experience of working with bovine and swine cells andanimals
  • Previous experience in in vitro embryo production in cows andpigs
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been establishedas $60,944.00 - $112,320.00 per year

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but notlimited to, the individual’s particular combination of education,skills, and experience, as well as organizationalrequirements.
