Scientist, Physico-Chemical Characterization (Mass Spectrometry)

R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease. GSK has invested in expanding its R&D space in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to build a new hub for mRNA‑based vaccine discovery and develop state‑of‑the‑art analytical methods.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop LC‑MS and LC‑MS/MS methods to characterize mRNA, DNA, proteins, N‑glycans, lipids, and vaccine components.
  • Perform routine biophysical characterization using LC‑MS, LC‑MS/MS, UHPLC, CGE, light scattering, particle characterization, spectroscopy, calorimetry or compendial tests as needed.
  • Prepare samples for characterization studies.
  • Maintain comprehensive electronic lab notebooks and documentation records.
  • Deliver reproducible and impactful results under ambitious timelines.
  • Execute and troubleshoot standard protocols, and develop new protocols to improve assays.
  • Act as an active member of a high‑performing team of top scientists driven by innovation, quality and excellence.
  • Contribute to a culture of excellence, transparency and collaboration within the global organization.
  • Develop next‑generation analytical methods for mRNA vaccines in collaboration with Preclinical, DS and DP teams.
Basic Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering or a related scientific field.
  • For MS candidates, three or more years of additional laboratory experience; for PhD candidates, no additional laboratory experience is required.
  • Two or more years of experience in mass spectrometry‑based technologies of biomolecules (mRNA, DNA, or proteins).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mRNA‑LNP vaccine analytics or vaccine development.
  • Strong theoretical and practical background in proteomics and biophysical characterization methodologies.
  • Good understanding of biopharma/vaccine development process.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within cross‑functional and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; good presentation skills.
  • Fluency in English.
Salary and Benefits

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $89,100 to $148,500, plus an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share‑based long‑term incentive program. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
