Job summary

AbbVie’s Pathology Laboratory within Local Delivery Translational Sciences (LDTS) is seeking a Scientist I, Pathology, to support pathology studies, assay development, data generation, and cross-functional collaboration. The role applies expertise in histology, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and laboratory operations to support study objectives and project deliverables.

The Scientist I will work with pathologists, toxicologists, scientists, and cross-functional teams to advance pathology

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, Pathology, Biomedical Sciences, Histotechnology, or a related discipline with typically 5+ years of relevant experience; OR Master’s degree with typically 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • ASCP HT/HTL certification preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with histology, immunohistochemistry, tissue processing, staining, microscopy, and pathology laboratory workflows.
  • Experience with experimental planning, method development, assay optimization, data interpretation, scientific presentations, and technical report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, troubleshoot technical issues, and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication, organizational, documentation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to work in a laboratory setting, stand for extended periods, perform repetitive hand motions, handle laboratory materials and equipment, move and lift materials weigh up to 40 pounds, and follow applicable safety practices when working with biological specimens, chemicals, and laboratory instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform tissue processing, staining, microscopy, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and related experimental workflows in support of project objectives.
  • Develop, optimize, validate, and implement pathology assays, histology methods, IHC protocols, and laboratory workflows.
  • Identify opportunities to improve pathology laboratory capabilities, assay performance, operational efficiency, and scientific impact.
  • Analyze, interpret, summarize, and communicate experimental data to project teams, functional groups, and scientific stakeholders.
  • Prepare study reports, technical summaries, SOPs, validation documentation, and scientific presentations as appropriate.
  • Represent the pathology function on cross-functional project teams and contribute to scientific discussions, study planning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Works closely with a small team of colleagues to coordinate, perform or assist with routine histology tasks and support laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, reagent and supply management, workflow optimization, documentation, and compliance with applicable safety and quality expectations.
  • Train and mentor junior scientists and associates in histology, IHC, microscopy, documentation practices, and laboratory best practices.

Job Description

The Pathology Laboratory within Local Delivery Translational Sciences (LDTS) develops, validates, and applies pathology-based methods to support drug discovery and development. The Scientist I, Pathology, is an independent contributor who supports pathology studies, assay development, data generation, and cross-functional collaboration. This role applies expertise in histology, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, assay development, and laboratory operations to support study objectives, data interpretation, and project deliverables with pathologists, toxicologists, scientists, and cross-functional teams.
