Who We Are

The Gill Corporation is one of the world's largest manufacturers of honeycomb, high‑performance floor panels, cargo compartment liners, and original equipment for passenger and freighter aircraft. The company also excels in many other types of reinforced plastics, including interior sandwich panels for creating structures such as aircraft galleys and bulkheads, honeycomb core, and related products.

The Gill Corporation is seeking a Scientist/Engineer III to be responsible for independently conducting laboratory project activities for the development of new products, processes, improvement of existing products and processes, and solving specific problems related to the manufacturing quality of various products. The role also involves mentoring other engineers and scientists as required.

Reporting to the R&D Manager, the responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

Responsibilities
  • Plans and executes a technical approach to a complex problem based on product specifications, problem statement, and/or desired product improvement. May work with customers to develop the problem statement.
  • Formulates resin systems on the chemistry of resins. Interprets test results and other pertinent information to adjust formulation and/or process variables as needed.
  • Develops processes for the manufacturing of new or existing products.
  • Supervises the work of laboratory technicians and trains them as needed.
  • Records all formulations, observations, and test results in detail and maintains the information so that other personnel could continue the project work. Performs all aspects of laboratory functions.
  • Independently coordinates and oversees production of new products, improvement of existing products, and/or processes and problem‑solving solutions.
  • Presents data within and to other departments as needed, and acts as a technical expert in their area of expertise.
  • Performs analytical, physical, and mechanical testing according to specifications and procedures.
  • Has a solid understanding of composite material testing or formulation chemistry.
  • Makes and executes recommendations for the improvement of manufacturing efficiencies, product quality, laboratory practices, and safety issues. Provides lab leadership on safe handling of chemicals and coordinates lab chemical waste as needed.
  • Provides assistance to other departments as assigned.
  • Supports the development of new technologies or formulations relevant for existing or new products utilizing resources such as literature searches (patents, scientific articles), conferences, etc., and proposes new project ideas based on research.
  • Regularly provides technical guidance to lower‑level scientist/engineers.
  • Reports project progress and prepares final reports at the conclusion of the project.
  • Engages with customers and suppliers on project status and product requirements.
  • Supports development of intellectual property for the business.

Required Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in a scientific or engineering field.
  • Advanced degree or coursework desirable.
  • Training in composite technology or mechanical/analytical testing is expected.
  • At least five years of relevant experience working with composite materials or resin formulations in industry or academia (as part of a Master’s or Ph.D. program).
  • Experience supporting the generation of intellectual property in industry or academia is a plus.
