Job description

Scientific Communications Writer – Freelance

Location: Remote

Start Date: October 12 - December 1, 2026

Hours: 40 hours/week for the first two weeks (approximately 80 hours), then approximately 20 hours/week through December 1; approximately 170–180 total project hours

Pay Rate: $50–$55/hour

We are seeking an experienced Scientific Communications Writer to support the development of a long-form ebook focused on genetically engineered animal models, experimental planning, and colony management.

Working from an established outline and provided scientific source materials, this person will develop technically accurate, engaging content for an audience of researchers and drug development professionals. The ideal candidate combines a strong life sciences background with the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear, polished content without sacrificing scientific depth or credibility.

What You’ll Do:

• Develop a scientifically rigorous, long-form ebook using an established outline and supporting source materials
• Research, review, and synthesize scientific literature into clear and cohesive content
• Translate complex concepts in genetics, molecular biology, and preclinical research for a sophisticated scientific audience
• Write about topics related to genetically engineered animal models, experimental planning, and colony management
• Collaborate with an agency team throughout the drafting, review, and revision process

What We’re Looking For:

• Professional scientific, medical, or life sciences writing experience, ideally supporting biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or preclinical research audiences
• Strong knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and/or preclinical research
• Experience or subject-matter familiarity with genetically engineered animal models strongly preferred
• Knowledge of areas such as transgenic models, knockout/knock-in models, CRISPR/Cas gene editing, model development and characterization, colony management, and/or engineered models used in disease research and preclinical drug development
• Demonstrated ability to review scientific literature and accurately synthesize highly technical information
• Strong long-form writing skills with the ability to make complex scientific topics clear and engaging while maintaining appropriate scientific depth
• Detail-oriented and comfortable working through multiple rounds of review and revision
• Reliable communicator who can collaborate effectively with scientific and agency stakeholders

Ideal Background:

This role would be particularly well suited for a scientific writer with direct experience creating content around genetics, genomics, gene editing, animal models, translational research, or preclinical drug development who can quickly get up to speed and contribute with minimal scientific hand-holding.
