Job summary

Charles County Public Schools seeks a qualified science teacher to deliver laboratory-based lessons and connect classroom activities to real-world science. The teacher will plan, implement and assess learning experiences for diverse students in a supportive school environment.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher with Maryland licensure, strong communication with students, parents and staff, and the ability to use up-to-date technology to enhance instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students.
  • Plans for a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments.
  • Demonstrates scientific concepts using apparatus, experiments, and instructional aids.
  • Instructs students in proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment, and life forms.
  • Monitors proper use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Plans and implements lab-based science lessons based on school standards.
  • Organizes laboratory activities for optimum learning.
  • Provides individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to diverse needs.
  • Encourages students to grow, learn, and improve.
  • Teaches science appropriate to students’ maturity and interests.
  • Uses latest technology in classes.
  • Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet diverse needs.
  • Creates an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social and emotional development.
  • Communicates with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Maintains professional competence and follows required procedures and practices.
  • Serves on special committees.

Job description

Bachelor’s degree or higher and meets Licensure requirements as established by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Other experience as established by Maryland Law and Board of Education policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students.

Plans for a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments.

Demonstrates scientific concepts by using scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aids.

Instructs students in proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and plant and animal life.

Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

Planning and implementing lab-based science lessons based on school standards

Organizes laboratory activities for optimum learning.

Provides individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.

Constantly encouraging students to grow, learn, and improve.

Teaching a level of science that is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

Using the latest technology in classes.

Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.

Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of children.

Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community.

Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.

Serves on special committees.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
