Job description
The DP‑5 Production Integration Group is seeking a Science/Engineering Project Leader to support the Detonator Production Enterprise. The Project Leader Team plans and coordinates manufacturing readiness activities to ensure the timely delivery of the highest quality detonation products and services to our customers. In this role, you will translate programmatic requirements into executable shop‑floor plans and coordinate cross‑functional production activities to ensure safe, secure, and timely execution. You will work closely with manufacturing, engineering, quality, safety, and program management organizations to drive alignment between production commitments and operational capability.
Under guidance from senior leaders, you will:
- Develop integrated project plans and schedules supporting manufacturing readiness and production execution.
- Build work breakdown structures and define executable work packages for production organizations.
- Coordinate activities across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and program teams.
- Monitor scope, schedule, and production deliverables to ensure commitments are met.
- Identify risks to production readiness and implement mitigation strategies.
- Support execution reviews and communicate project status to stakeholders.
- Ensure activities are aligned with safety, security, and quality requirements.
In addition to the responsibilities of the lower level, the Science/Engineering Project Leader 2 independently manages moderately complex manufacturing readiness and production integration efforts with limited direction. At this level, you will:
- Lead integrated production readiness efforts across multiple organizations.
- Develop and manage comprehensive execution plans tied to programmatic deliverables.
- Coordinate directly with program managers and line organizations to align scope, resources, and production schedules.
- Oversee mid‑sized cross‑functional teams supporting production execution.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned production integration efforts.
- Proactively identify production risks, resource constraints, and schedule impacts, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Integrate production activities with broader enterprise priorities and customer commitments.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages.
- Experience managing scope, schedule, and deliverables in a production or technical environment.
- Knowledge of engineering or manufacturing principles.
- Strong interpersonal and coordination skills, with ability to build relationships across organizations.
- Experience working with cross‑functional teams.
- Understanding of safety, security, and quality requirements in a regulated environment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage moderately complex technical or production projects.
- Experience leading cross‑functional teams in a manufacturing or operations environment.
- Advanced understanding of project management methodologies and change control.
- Proven ability to negotiate scope, priorities, and resources across organizations.
- Experience identifying production or readiness risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering related field from an accredited institution and 2 years directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

- Master's in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Experience in manufacturing readiness, production operations, or enterprise production environments.
- Experience working in a national laboratory or federal environment.
- Knowledge of DOE production or project management requirements.
- Experience using project management and scheduling tools.
- Experience managing multi‑million‑dollar production or technical efforts.
- Experience working within highly regulated, safety‑critical production environments.
- Active DOE security clearance.
Due to federal restrictions contained in the current National Defense Authorization Act, citizens of the People's Republic of China— including the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau—as well as citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Russian Federation, who are not Lawful Permanent Residents ("green card" holders), are prohibited from accessing facilities that support the mission, functions, and operations of national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities, which includes Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating the employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. This requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q – This position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. Obtaining such clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
- Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new‑employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre‑offer.
Term status – Laboratory employees applying for regular‑status positions are converted to regular status.
