Job summary

Erie 1 BOCES is seeking two itinerant School Social Workers for the West Seneca, NY area. The role involves serving as a liaison between home, school, and community with direct services based on IEP mandates.

Responsibilities include progress reporting, IEP development, attending CSE meetings, and collaborating with administrators, teachers, and counselors to optimize student education. Must hold NYS Teacher Certification for School Social Worker and NYS LCSW/LMSW license.

• Provide counseling to support personal, social and emotional development.
• Document and report on cases; ensure compliance with procedures.
• Investigate cases of truancy; report abuse/neglect as required.
• Remain knowledgeable about laws pertaining to minors; perform related duties.

Job Responsibilities

The School Social Worker serves as a liaison between the home, school and community. The school social worker is responsible for direct casework with parents and children, consulting with school personnel and for being referral source to and liaison with community agencies. Provides direct services based on IEP mandates. Responsible for progress reporting, development of IEP and goals, attends CSE meetings for students.

1. Works closely with administrators, teachers, counselors, and other personnel in making provisions for the optimal education for students.

2. Collect pertinent and appropriate information on the student and his/her home environment. The social worker will observe the student in the classroom when advisable.

3. Interpret the aims, objectives, and procedures of the program and assists in establishing a close cooperative relationship between the home and school.

4. Interprets to the parents their responsibilities for the student's proper development and adjustment to school.

5. Assists with family problems which may be interfering with the best development of the student.

6. Increases the parents' understanding, their constructive and consistent participation, and recommendstheir use of appropriate community resources.

7. Carries on case conferences with school personnel to interpret home and community conditions in order that they may be more aware of the student's problems outside of the school, and to establish and plan for their respective roles in the modifications of the pupil's behavior.

8. Becomes familiar with community agencies and recommends to the appropriate office students who should be referred there; then assists in making referrals and follow-ups where advisable.

9. Prepares written and oral presentations as required.

10. Carry on counseling with the individual child to assist in the improvement of personal, social, and emotional maladjustment and to develop an attitude of responsible self-direction in school and community life.

11. Make a final written summary with recommendations upon the closing of each case.

12. Investigate cases of extreme truancy.

13. Assist in the reporting of abuse and/or neglect to Child Protective Services.

14. Have a good working knowledge of law as it pertains to minors.

15. Other related duties as assigned by the Related Service Administrator.
