Job Description

Job Goal: To assist in the evaluation of and in the prescription for students in order to maximize their learning opportunities.

Qualifications
  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Master’s degree in school psychology, National Association of School Psychologist (NASP) approved training program preferred.
  3. Valid Alaska Teacher’s Certificate with endorsement in School Psychology required.
  4. Two or more years demonstrated successful classroom teaching experience preferred.
  5. A minimum of one year of experience as a school psychologist in a public school setting; experience in the area of special education preferred.
  6. Must have competency in the administration and interpretation of a broad spectrum of psychometric instruments (intelligence; achievement; behavioral; and nonverbal).
  7. Willingness to travel to remote locations in small airplanes.
  8. Ability to live and work in a cross-cultural, rural Alaskan setting, staying in villages/schools overnight.
  9. Ability to carry out successfully the duties described below.
Duties
  • Participates as an integral member of the Special Education Eligibility and IEP Teams.
  • Conducts screening and child find activities.
  • Conducts in-depth psycho educational assessment on children referred for special education services. Reports test findings and behavioral observations to Eligibility and IEP teams. Summarizes diagnostic/prescriptive data in written reports.
  • Conducts routine group and/or individual psychotherapy on children diagnosed as having behavior disorders. In locations where ongoing therapy is not feasible, trains teachers and parents in the conduct of outreach therapeutic programs.
  • Assists IEP team to translate evaluations and diagnostic findings into concrete and realistic remedial activities. Assists teachers in writing these into individual instructional programs.
  • Provides in-service training to regular teachers, special education teachers and special education aides on tests administration and/or interpretation, behavior management techniques and related topics.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the confidential central office student file system. Will assist the supervisor in conducting periodic internal file audits.
  • Will act in the capacity as a “case supervisor” for new referrals. Will be responsible for insuring that intake cases have all necessary referral, file access, due process, parental permission, and individual educational program forms.
  • Adheres to the ethical standards of the profession and seek to develop professionally.
  • Adhere to established rules, regulations and laws and work cooperatively to accomplish the goals and objectives of LKSD.
  • Participate in development of LKSD special education staff policies and procedures.
  • Assist families in understanding their child’s rights under IDEA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
