Job Description

Provide support to food service activities at the assigned location, including directing food service personnel, producing food that meets mandated nutritional needs, providing written support, and complying with health standards and national meal programs.

Essential Functions

• Monitor, clean, and maintain storage, food preparation, and serving areas of the kitchen (e.g., utensils, equipment, refrigerators) to maintain safe and sanitary conditions.
• Estimate food preparation amounts to meet projected meal requirements and minimize waste.
• Evaluate prepared food for flavor, appearance, and temperature to ensure acceptance by students and staff.
• Inspect food and supply deliveries to verify quantity, quality, and specifications.
• Stock, inventory, and order food and supplies to ensure availability and maintain adequate inventory levels.
• Manage assigned site operations to provide safe and efficient food services in compliance with nutritional menu requirements and health standards.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate N&W Substitutes in food preparation, serving, and cleaning to maintain safety and comply with national programs.
• Attend department meetings, in‑service trainings, workshops, etc., to convey and gather required information.
• Reconcile transactions (e.g., meal counts, monies collected) to maintain account balances.
• Maintain manual and electronic files and records (e.g., production reports, temperature logs, time sheets) for up‑to‑date information and historical reference.
• Use web‑based programs and software related to the N&W Department to support daily operations.
• Respond to inquiries from students, staff, and the public regarding food items and service policies.
• Screens free/reduced meal applications for accuracy before submitting to the Nutrition & Wellness Department.

Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Perform technical tasks requiring safety practices, project planning, accurate record maintenance, operation of standard kitchen equipment, and use of applicable software; adhere to safety practices and procedures.

Knowledge: Perform basic math, read technical information, compose documents, facilitate discussions, and analyze situations; understand safety practices and procedures, food preparation and handling, sanitation practices, and quantity cooking methods.

Abilities: Schedule activities, gather, collate, and classify data, work with diverse groups and equipment, solve problems, set priorities, and work as part of a team.

Responsibilities: Work under limited supervision following standardized practices, direct others in a small unit, utilize resources from other units.

Work Environment

Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, 30% standing. Exposure to extreme temperatures and risk of injury. Must lift 50 pounds.

Experience

Job‑related experience with increasing responsibility is required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.
