Job summary

Morgan County Schools in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, seeks a School Nurse Substitute to support health services across the district. You will perform health appraisals, counseling, and vision screening for students, and assist with care planning when a nurse is not available.

The position requires WV RN licensure, eligibility for WV School Nurse certification, and BSN or willingness to pursue one. Strong communication and record-keeping are essential in this role.

Qualifications

• Must be a licensed WV Registered Nurse.
• Must hold or be eligible for WV School Nurse certification.
• BSN or willingness to complete one.
• Strong evaluations or recommendations from previous employers/supervisors.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with school personnel, students, parents, and the general public.
• Professional nursing experience required, experience working with school-age children preferred.
• Ability to compile notes and write reports.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to successfully carry out the responsibilities of the position.

Responsibilities

• Provide health appraisals on children as needed or referred.
• Provide counseling for children regarding health concerns as needed or requested.
• Provide vision screening for all kindergarten students, first-time enterers and others referred by teachers, principals, or parents. Make referrals where indicated.
• Provide scoliosis screening to all seventh graders, if time permits.
• Assist in care planning at the school, helping to set up policies for care when a school nurse is not available.
• Provide materials for AIDS education and information upon request for students, teachers, and other personnel.
• Assist with immunization checks on all first time enterers (Kindergarten and transfer in students).
• Serves as a resource person for all school personnel in matters of health.
• Provide health related in-services to faculty as requested.
• Provide in-services to staff relevant to health concerns of the medical/health needs of individual students.
• Act as a referral person, cooperating with community agencies that contribute to community health and welfare.
• Works closely with the Department of Special Education in providing health appraisals, counseling concerning health matters, in-services and trainings, and acts as a resource person where indicated. Also assists to interpret medical reports concerning students where needed.
• Maintains appropriate records and documentation.
• Assists with pre-enrollment screenings with the Special Education Department.
• Provides materials on health education upon request from teachers.
• Provides specialized procedure training and follow up as needed or requested (medication training, cath training, etc.)
• Utilizes knowledge, education, skills and experience to plan, implement, deliver and evaluate health programs in the school system.
