Job Description

The School Nurse (RN) serves in a pivotal role to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education. Using clinical knowledge and judgment, the school nurse provides health care to students and staff; performs health screenings and coordinates referrals to the medical home or private healthcare provider. The school nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for health care and a healthy school environment.

Qualifications
  • Must possess a degree from a state or accredited program in nursing to include public preparation within the basic program preferred, or
  • A graduate of a state or approved program in nursing. At least two (2) years of experience in clinical nursing, and fifteen semester hours (or equivalent) in public health nursing
  • Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the United States
  • Must have acquired nursing training and some judgment, especially in handling emergency and accident situations
  • Must have at least four (4) years of experience. Two (2) years must be within the last six (6) years preceding submission of application
  • Candidate must be able to work cooperatively with his/her peers. (CANDIDATE MUST PROVIDE EVIDENCE OF REGISTERED NURSE EXPERIENCE AT TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • Considerable knowledge of modern nursing principles, practices and techniques and the ability to apply them to school situations
  • Considerable knowledge of department policy, regulations, and procedures applicable to the school health programs
Responsibilities
  • Attends to students who are injured or who become ill while at school, administers first-aid and other emergency nursing treatment, and arranges for medical attention where the circumstances indicate
  • Assists teachers and health authorities when special community health programs are carried out
  • Assists with in-service training activities by giving instructions to students and school personnel in such subjects as nutrition, rest and relaxation, communicable diseases, home health care, and interprets such subjects to parents
  • Assists in selecting first-aid supplies to be kept at the school and secures and carries out medically approved written instructions for care of sick or injured students
  • Maintains accurate and clear health records of students in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures
  • Confers with students and parents regarding health problems when requested
  • Excludes and readmits students in accordance with existing school health regulation policies
  • Perform other as assigned by supervisor or designee
