Job Description

Position Summary: Provide direct health services and assist in educational services for identified students with significant health support needs. Provide support as needed for the school health program in the district and building assignment.

Qualifications, Certification & Experience

  • Current license as a registered nurse (RN) from the Iowa Board of Nursing
  • Bachelor's degree, ideally in Nursing, from an accredited college or university
  • Previous work experience in pediatric medical complexity settings
  • Knowledge of professional standards, the Nurse Practice Act and other statutes and regulations
  • Current CPR certification
  • Completed studies designed to develop knowledge and skills in the following areas:
    • health concerns of school youth
    • physical and emotional health of children and adults
    • community agencies/resources
    • legal rights and due process
  • Ability to manage the components of the School Health Program

Professional Performance Criteria

Professional Responsibilities

  • Provides services to students with significant medical needs in the classroom setting
  • Provides skilled nursing according to the physician-prescribed plan of care and maintain compliance standards through charting and record keeping
  • Performs the requirements of the position including but not limited to providing services while riding school transportation, administering medicine in accordance with medical plans and emergency procedures, regular operation of medically necessary devices, and supporting the building/district nursing needs as necessary
  • Provides services as required by IEP goals related to students with severe health needs including but not limited to breathing difficulties, seizures, feeding tubes, ports, trachs, and life‑saving measures
  • Assists in classroom services including but not limited to toileting, instructional supports, and classroom management
  • Work in collaboration with outside medical professionals to ensure the safety and appropriate treatment plans for identified students
  • Contributes and participates in a positive manner to building and district professional growth opportunities and applies the knowledge to practice
  • Keeps current with appropriate nursing content and school health instructional techniques and strategies (e.g. participation in professional organizations, workshops, conferences, including the development of technology skills)
  • Remains informed on building and district policies and works cooperatively toward their implementation and participates when appropriate in curriculum development, building/district assignments, and selecting/implementing building and district goals
  • Meets responsibilities beyond the school day related to school functions
  • Maintains a professional appearance appropriate to job responsibilities
