School Nurse Responsibilities
  • 1:1 nurse
  • Assumes the primary responsibility for student's health needs at school and on the bus to and from school.
  • Administers first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatment (e.g. feeding tubes, suctioning, vent care, and may support toileting plans as needed) for the purpose of providing appropriate assessment and care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children based on provider orders, scope of practice, district protocols, and professional standards. Documents all care provided in the student's health record.
  • Assists in the supervision and instruction of the student in the general education or special education classrooms; supports student's behavior throughout the school day in all school and bus settings; supports student's classroom participation and learning; supports student's school-based therapies; and supports student as determined necessary by the school team.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeteria, parking lots, etc) and on the bus to and from school for the purpose of providing a safe and positive environment conducive to learning. Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment, complying with legal requirements, and reporting concerns to the appropriate team members.
  • Communicates with parents concerning their child's health.
  • Interacts collaboratively with other team members at the building and district levels.
  • Develops, implements, and trains over student health care plans in partnership with the school nurse for the purpose of addressing students' health needs and implementing health care directions from parents and/or physician orders.
School Nurse Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Has obtained or is eligible for an endorsement as a School Nurse as prescribed in the bylaws of the State Department of Education.
  • Experience or specialized training in the field of pediatric mental health is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain ethical and accountability standards.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills, and communicates effectively and courteously both verbally and in writing.
  • Has the ability to coordinate activities and work effectively with professional staff, support staff, parents, and representatives from agencies outside the school system.
