Job Summary:

The purpose of this job is to assist students by providing medical assessments and treatments that may be needed during the school day. Provides care to students and staff on a daily basis through planned care or as needed for acute needs. Organizes, implements, and maintains comprehensive school health records, adheres to professional standards of care and procedures in local policy, and disseminates health guidance consistent with guidelines from the Virginia Department of Health in conjunction with Virginia Department of Education.

Essential Duties:

  • Utilize the nursing process in the provision of direct care procedures and nursing services for students and staff which includes: (a) assessment, (b) planning, (c) implementation, and (d) evaluation. Administer medications and monitor delegated medication administration.
  • Collaborate with parents and physicians to develop Individual Healthcare Plans (IHP) for students with chronic or acute health conditions in order to ensure necessary school treatment needs are met and to ensure wellness or stability of condition.
  • Promote wellness and positive health behaviors via individual health teaching and counseling to students, in-service activities with staff, advice to parents, and participation in the provision of classroom instruction when appropriate.
  • Provide education and training to staff who provide care and/or medication procedures for children with health needs.
  • Promote a healthy school environment by identifying possible health and environmental hazards and participate in action plans for remediation. Assess, document and communicate with administration and parents regarding immunization requirements for student entry to school campus.
  • Assist in the evaluation of students for special education services by completing medical history assessments and identifying relevant medical or health variables that might impact educational achievement.
  • Participate in implementing a system for managing school emergencies and educate staff and students to prevent accidental injury occurrences. Responsible for establishing emergency action plans for students with chronic illnesses.
  • Responsible for completing and documenting required health screenings during the course of the child's development and communicating recommended follow-up to parents/guardians as needed.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills in training situations and displays the capacity for clear and composed leadership and staff guidance in emergency situations.s.
  • Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or Supervisor of Health Services.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications: Registered Nurse License from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professionals and experience as a registered nurse.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
