School Librarian Rate: $19 - 22/hr (depending on experience & qualifications)

Description

Sacred Heart School is seeking a warm, welcoming, and organized Part-time Librarian to lead a vibrant, non-traditional library environment centered on student choice, literacy intervention, and a passion for reading.

Unlike a traditional research or academic library, our school library functions as a cozy literacy-focused sanctuary. Operating as part of our targeted literacy intervention block, small student groups (1/2 to 1/3 of a class at a time) visit the library to explore books tailored to their interests and reading abilities. The Librarian will cultivate a safe, joyful, and quiet environment where students from TK through 8th grade are inspired to discover the pure pleasure of reading.

• Establish a warm, inviting, and peaceful atmosphere that encourages quiet reflection, joy, and exploration.


• Model and teach appropriate, respectful library behaviors appropriate for diverse age groups (ages 4 to 14).


• Design and implement calming \"centering\" activities (e.g., short engaging read-alouds, quiet breathing exercises, or mindful library entry routines) to transition small groups into the space.


• Host open library hours during upper-grade recess periods, offering a gentle, safe, and welcoming haven for students seeking a quiet place to unwind and read.


• Maintain an intuitive, interest-based shelving system where books are organized by topics, genres, and themes rather than traditional Dewey Decimal classification.


• Ensure all books are clearly labeled by reading level, empowering students to independently select books that represent an \"Easy Read\", \"On-Level Read\", or \"Challenging Read\".


• Manage the weekly checkout and check-in process for students (1-2 books per student weekly).


• Perform frequent sorting, shelving, and inventory restocking to keep shelves accessible, appealing, and tidy.

Literacy Intervention Support & Student Guidance

• Guide small groups of students (TK-8th grade) during literacy intervention blocks, assisting them in discovering books aligned with both their reading levels and personal interests.


• Celebrate student choice and autonomy in reading selection, helping reluctant readers build confidence and enthusiasm.


• Warmly welcome, train, and collaborate with parent volunteers and high school student volunteers to assist with shelving, book repairs, and special library activities.


• Direct volunteers effectively to ensure smooth daily operations and catalog maintenance.

Requirements

WORK SCHEDULE
Hours: Mondays & Thursdays: 8am - 3pm & Fridays: 8am-1pm

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

• Demonstrated Love of Reading: A deep, infectious passion for children's and young adult literature.


• Experience with Youth: Experience working with children across a broad developmental range (ages 4-14 / TK through 8th grade) in an educational, childcare, or library setting.


• Organizational Skills: Strong attention to detail and ability to keep physical spaces organized and appealing.


• Interpersonal & Collaborative Skills: Excellent communication skills with an ability to connect warmth and patience with students, staff, parents, and youth volunteers.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
