Description

This position is responsible for ensuring that schools and associated facilities remain clean, safe, and well‑maintained. Duties include directing custodial staff, performing maintenance, handling special school equipment, providing security, and completing any additional custodial duties as directed.

Salary Range

School Custodian III, WS-02: $4,849.00 per month

Examples of Duties
  • Directs work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school;
  • Assigns, lays out, inspects, and supervises the work of subordinates to ensure buildings and grounds are kept clean and orderly;
  • Personally performs more difficult maintenance work on plumbing, electrical fixtures, and woodwork that does not require journeyman trade skills;
  • Supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions;
  • Has charge of cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment such as swimming pools, auditoriums, and loud‑speaker systems;
  • Supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants, and lawns;
  • Requisitions, receives, stores, and is responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment for the school, taking periodic inventories;
  • Makes records of supplies dispensed and equipment issued;
  • Makes reports on work accomplished and records unusual happenings or accidents;
  • Keeps daily time sheets;
  • Has security responsibility for the school, including turning night lights on and off at proper hours;
  • May supervise student help, operate power equipment such as lawn mowers, and perform typical duties of lower‑level custodians if necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience Requirement: Applicants must have the kind and quality of experience described below, totaling the amounts shown in the table below. For School Custodian III, at least one year of work experience must have been comparable in nature and scope to that of a School Custodian in the State service.

School Custodian III: 2 years general experience, 2 years supervisory experience, 2 years total experience.

General Experience: Progressive responsibility work experience in one or a combination of the following areas:

  • Janitorial or related custodial work such as sweeping, dusting, and cleaning of buildings;
  • Grounds maintenance work including cleaning, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping, and raking;
  • General laboring work such as moving materials, furniture, equipment, loading/unloading trucks, carrying/unloading and stacking tools and supplies, and digging trenches and ditches.

Supervisory Aptitude: Demonstrated aptitude or potential for supervisory duties through supervisory assignments, training courses, or favorable appraisals.

Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience is not, by itself, sufficient; the overall experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Salary

The advertised salary is for full‑time employment and includes shortage and school‑year differentials, if applicable.

Payday

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or the previous business day) of every month.
