Job summary

City of San Antonio is hiring a school crossing guard to supervise pedestrian safety near a school and guide children at intersections. The role may be full or part time with split shifts during fall and spring school years.

Work location is downtown San Antonio with a fixed schedule and no supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities include placing cones, guiding children, reporting hazards, and counting crossing numbers.

Responsibilities

• Place traffic cones before/after school and lift light equipment (≈7 lb).

• Notify authorities of hazards and pedestrian accidents in vicinity.
• Call 311 if school flashing lights malfunction.
• Clear crosswalks of rocks, glass, or debris to prevent injuries.
• Maintain accurate counts of children crossing in morning/afternoon.
• Perform related duties as required.

Job description

Under general supervision, school crossing guard is responsible for performing routine pedestrian safety work in the vicinity of a school. Guides school children at intersections before and after school. Work may be full or part time and may require working split shifts. Term of employment is during the fall and spring school year only. Exercises no supervision.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Hours

7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. & 2:30 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. Monday - Friday. Schedules may vary based on facility.

• Places traffic cones in street before school is open and after school hours, occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing 7 pounds.
• Guides school children across streets and assists disabled children and small children in crossing.
• Notifies police headquarters of hazards and pedestrian accidents in their vicinity.
• Calls 311 when school flashing lights are not working properly.
• Clears crosswalks of rocks, glass, cans, and other items in order to prevent injuries to children.
• Keeps accurate count of children crossing in the morning and in the afternoon.
• Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

• Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Preferred Requirement

• Previous school crossing guard experience.

• Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
