Job summary

Township of Lower Merion in Ardmore, PA, is hiring a part-time crossing guard to help students safely cross streets before and after school, mornings 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and afternoons 2:00 p.m.

to 4:15 p.m. This role requires alertness, reliable transportation, and a valid driver’s license. The successful candidate will work under the Police Department, observe traffic gaps, lead children across roadways or intersections, assist the public, and report any crime or suspicious activity

Qualifications

• High school diploma or the equivalent.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to instruct students in the safe crossing of intersections.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
• Ability to pass and maintain background checks: state police, child abuse history, FBI background.

Summary

SCHEDULE:

• Morning 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
• Afternoon 2:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

This position is responsible for providing the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection.

Works under the general supervision of the Police Department.

• Provides information and assistance to the public.
• Reports any crime or suspicious activity observed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or the equivalent.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to instruct students in the safe crossing of intersections.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
• Ability to successfully pass and maintain the following background checks: (1) Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check, (2) Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Certification, and (3) FBI Criminal Background Check through the PA Department of Human Services.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to drive for a minimum of 1 hour, sit for a minimum of 1 hour and walk up to maximum of 5 hours per workday.
• Ability to bend, stoop and lift 20% of the workday.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds for utilizing assigned equipment.
• Ability to use both the right and left hand for firm grasping, repetitive actions and fine manipulation.
• Ability to perform job functions in all types of weather and temperatures.
• Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions around moving vehicles, parked vehicles and traffic.

This position is not eligible for Township-paid fringe benefits.
