Qualifications

• Hold, at minimum, a master's degree in school counseling.
• Meet the WVDE certification/licensure requirements for a school counselor.
• Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-1 and/or §18A-3-10; meet the qualifications in WV Code §18A-3-2a and §18A-2-9.
• Fulfill continuing education requirements through professional development including WVDE School Counseling Conferences and ASCA offerings.
• Uphold ASCA ethical and professional standards.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and administration.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the school counseling program in alignment with the comprehensive counseling plan and WV Standards for Student Success.
• Consult with the principal to identify and resolve student issues, needs, and problems.
• Provide short-term individual and group counseling for personal growth and educational planning.
• Offer crisis intervention for students with serious or urgent issues.
• Assist students with college, career, and postsecondary planning.
• Refer students to support services and coordinate with community agencies as needed.
• Conduct developmental group counseling activities and career/completion programs.
• Maintain confidential student records and ensure compliance with privacy laws.
