Job summary

Marion P. Thomas Charter School seeks a School Counselor to foster a college-bound culture and support students toward four-year college eligibility. You will oversee recruitment and admissions, coordinate counseling services, and collaborate with external partners to enhance college prep resources.

The role requires NJDOE School Counselor Certification with 2–3 years of high school/college counseling experience; BA is required and MA preferred. Ten-and-a-half-month term with MPTEA union status.

Qualifications

• NJDOE School Counselor Certification is required.
• Minimum 2-3 years of high school/college counseling experience.
• Experience with college admissions process is a plus.
• Experience facilitating standardized testing; scheduling classes is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Oversee student recruitment and enrollment/admissions processes (Open Houses, school visits, fairs).
• Maintain a visible college culture and decorate walls with college paraphernalia.
• Maintain external relationships to bring services or opportunities (SAT prep, guest speakers).
• Ensure all eligible students apply to a four-year college program.
• Collect and monitor student academic progress, with on-track data.
• Supervise credit recovery programs and opportunities for students.
• Supervise the National Honor Society.
• Facilitate college admission and financial aid workshops for students and parents.
• Support scholarship applications for school foundation and general scholarships.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

As a School Counselor, you will foster a college-bound environment, support students’ successful completion of high school and transition to college, and ensure all students are four-year college eligible. The Guidance Counselor is crucial to the success of our students.

Do you have what it takes?

• Education and Experience:

• BA required, MA in counseling preferred

• NJDOE School Counselor Certification

• Minimum 2-3 years of high school/college counseling experience

• Experience with the college admission process is a plus

• Experience facilitating standardized testing

• Experience in scheduling classes is a plus

THE ROLE:

• Under the direction of the Department Chair of Guidance, oversee the entire student recruitment and enrollment/admissions process (Open Houses, articulation meetings, advertising, school visits, high school fairs, New Schools Expo, enrollment night)

• Maintain a visible college culture throughout the school by decorating walls with college paraphernalia, motivational messages, etc

• Maintain external relationships to bring services or opportunities to the school (e.g., SAT test prep courses, guest speakers)

• Ensure all eligible students apply to a four-year college program, including a required application to a NJ public institution.

• Collect and monitor student academic progress, specifically on-track for promotion/graduation data

• Supervise credit recovery programs and opportunities for students (e.g., online credit recovery, summer school)

• Supervise the school’s National Honor Society

• Facilitate college admission and financial aid workshops for students and parents

• Support scholarship application and award process for students applying for the Marion P. Thomas Charter School Foundation Scholarships and general scholarships.

• Performs other duties as assigned

• Salary range: BA $66,901-$94,701 / MA $68,151-$95,951

• Term of Employment: 10.5 Months
