Job description

Position Title: Counselor – Northgate High School (200 Day Contract, 2026‑2027 School Year)
  • Plan a goals driven, comprehensive school counseling program using curriculum, standards, resources, and data to address the needs of all students.
  • Coordinate individual student planning and responsive services designed to meet student needs on an individual and small group basis.
  • Create and support a student centered environment which promotes the development of post‑secondary planning and soft skills.
  • Assist students, staff, and community in crisis response within the district.
  • Provide classroom level, school counseling instruction.
  • Provide support and assistance for students as they navigate critical and emergency situations.
  • Provide opportunities to assist all students with setting academic, career, and social/emotional goals through individual counseling, small groups, classroom or other advisement activities.
  • Conduct individual student conferences based on referrals initiated by teachers, administrators, or parents.
  • Conduct small group counseling sessions with students who share a common need. Assist students to identify strengths, weaknesses, abilities, and interests.
  • Assist students to develop appropriate study, social, refusal, and protective skills. Conference with students and parents to address academic deficiencies and provide suggestions for reversing failure.
  • Conduct student observations to develop an insight into student performance and interpersonal relationships.
  • Communicate information to teachers that may help students' success in the classroom.
  • Schedule and conduct parent conferences and/or counseling sessions.
  • Report and follow up on cases of child neglect and abuse.
  • Coordinate community educational programs and distribute relevant guidance materials to parents, students, and teachers.
  • Prepare written documentation on counseling sessions and follow-up sessions. Work with principal and staff to provide input for student and academic placements.
  • Perform such other duties as may be required by the school principal or district.
Required Education, Certification or Training

Masters degree and appropriate state certification.

Required Skills

Education preparation and practical knowledge of the most effective practices in elementary counseling services with strong emphasis on interpersonal skills, child growth and development; effective oral and written communication and the capability to plan, implement, and evaluate counseling programs and services.
