Job Description
Primary Function: The School Counselor shall be directly responsible to the Principal. The Counselor will provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for students at the appropriate school level. Responsibilities include promoting the social, emotional, academic, and career development of each student; consulting with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness; and providing appropriate support to the total school program.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college or university and either possess or be eligible to acquire the appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the School Board.
- Strong organizational, management, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated successful instructional experience, general leadership ability, and personal characteristics necessary for working with staff, parents, and the community.
- Alternative qualifications may be found appropriate and acceptable by the Superintendent and School Board.
Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality of student and school personnel information while ensuring the safety and welfare of all students and staff.
- Follow federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies regarding children’s educational welfare.
- Report any pertinent information to appropriate authorities in cases of child endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
- Meet with and instruct students in assigned locations at designated times.
- Collect and interpret data about students to assist in program planning and occupational and/or educational placement, including the development of a Career Development Plan.
- Provide individual and school-related counseling to students who refer themselves or are referred by parents, teachers, or administrators.
- Provide small group counseling as needed for all grade levels on developmental or problem‑centered issues.
- Design coherent instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, current instructional practices, students, the community, and Character Education curriculum goals.
- Prepare for assigned classes and provide evidence of lesson preparation upon request of the building administrator(s).
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning styles.
- Provide new student orientation and assist with adjustment problems or concerns.
- Consult regularly with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding student needs.
- Attend Child Study meetings and offer suggestions for intervention plans as requested.
- Serve as a referral source to parents and students who need specialized services beyond those provided by the school.
- Assist with mediation services for student conflicts.
- Provide information and training to parents concerning parenting skills and resources for handling family crises.
- Consult with teachers regarding specific student needs and concerns.
- Work with teachers and receiving counselors to prepare students for transitions between schools and grade levels.
- Promote effective public relations by communicating with parents and community members about the counseling program.
- Appraise students’ interests, aptitudes, abilities, educational achievements, and personality development.
- Assist in referrals alongside the building administrator(s) and the psychologist for specialized services.
- Assist in group sessions with teachers, parents, community resource personnel, and administrators.
- Participate in sessions with teachers and other personnel to individualize instruction.
- Confere with parents in group or individual sessions about the total school program and students’ vocational and personal development.
- Maintain a positive discipline policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
- Ensure adequate supervision of students.
- Manage classroom procedures to maximize academic learning time.
- Establish and maintain rapport with students.
- Motivate students to achieve maximum potential.
- Create a supportive learning environment encouraging social interaction, active engagement, and self‑motivation.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Collaborate with staff, families, and community resources to support a diverse student population.
- Work collegially and collaboratively with peers, school personnel, and the community to promote and support student learning.
- Model professional, moral, and ethical standards and personal integrity.
- Provide service to the profession, division, and community.
- Comply with and support school and division regulations and policies.
- Maintain proper boundaries with students, respecting ethical and legal duties and serving as a role model.
- Provide a good professional appearance, demeanor, dress, and behavior.
- Participate in curriculum development programs, faculty committees, and student activity sponsorship as required.
- Assume responsibilities outside the classroom related to school functions.
- Maintain licensure at the state and/or national level and pursue professional growth.
- Model non‑discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned by administration in accordance with school/system policies and practices.
Physical Conditions
Duties are performed in typical school settings: guidance office, classrooms, gymnasium, auditorium, and recreation areas. Responsibilities often involve frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment or materials weighing up to ~40 pounds. Occasional travel on field trips may be required. The role requires daily personal and close contact with children and regular contact with staff, administrators, and parents, including phone and in‑person communication. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on personnel evaluation.
Terms of Contract
Ten‑month contract – 200 days – 7.5 hours per day.
