Job summary

Clear Creek Amana Community School District is seeking a School Bus Monitor for the 2026-2027 school year in Chesapeake, VA. The role supports the bus driver in ensuring student safety, behavior, and orderly loading and unloading.

School Bus Monitor
Job Summary

Assists the bus driver with the safety, movement, management and care of the children boarding the school bus, leaving the bus or being transported

Qualifications
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with six (6) months driving experience
  • Must pass a DOT drug and alcohol test
Specific Duties
  • Seat self in an area on the bus to ensure observation of all passengers at all times and make sure they are following school bus safety rules
  • Assist the school bus driver in reporting infractions of school bus safety
  • Observe potential problems between students and keep those students separated by assigning seats if warranted
  • When working on a school bus equipped with a wheelchair lift, operate the lift for loading and unloading of wheelchairs and also ensure that the wheelchair is properly secured on the school bus
  • Secure students who ride in child restraint seats, etc.
  • Attend school bus safety meetings
  • Maintain a high standard of student conduct at all times
  • Assist driver in keeping the bus clean and inspect for damages and repairs daily
  • Ensure that a child takes his/her belongings with him/her when departing the bus
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
Other Skills/Abilities

While performing the duties of this job, employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head and push/pull or lift/move heavy objects. The job may require exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. The following list of critical demands is representative but not all-inclusive of the job.

  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions.
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts

  • Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written and oral form
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
