Job summary

Southeast Polk Community School District is seeking a Fleet Mechanic to maintain and repair district buses and large vehicles. The role requires extensive hands-on experience with heavy-duty chassis, diesel and gasoline engines, and preventive maintenance programs.

CDL with endorsements is expected or obtainable within six months. The position emphasizes safety, teamwork, and timely completion of work orders, with on-call duties and potential overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of light, medium and heavy-duty chassis experience or ASE Certification.
• Background in large class vehicle operation, maintenance and repair.
• Knowledge of heavy trucks, diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair.
• Ability to work harmoniously with others and handle emergencies.
• Basic clerical skills and a high school diploma or equivalent.
• CDL with appropriate endorsements or ability to obtain within six months.
• Full set of hand tools with reimbursement up to $600/year.

Responsibilities

• Inspect district vehicles and buses to locate and determine the extent of necessary overhaul or repair.
• Plan and implement a program of scheduled preventative maintenance for the district bus fleet.
• Recommend and stock repair parts and supplies; complete work orders promptly.
• Write requisitions, order parts, and ensure timely receipt of materials.
• Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed for assigned jobs.
• Repair cooling, fuel, electrical, and exhaust systems; tune engines using standard testing equipment.
• Perform safety inspections to ensure State Inspection compliance.
• Maintain high safety standards and good housekeeping in all work areas.
• Back-up bus routes as assigned or in case of emergency.
• Provide a role model for students and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Occasionally overtime may be required.
